P47 Thunderbolt Canopy
« on: October 08, 2014, 02:45:43 AM »
Hello,

I need some help.
I'm building a P47-N (Bubble) Thunderbolt for F2B and I need a canopy for it.
Does someone know a source for a P47 canopy?
Maybe a other WWII canopy would work too (P51 Mustang,....)
It is not a scale project, just a semiscale stunter, so it is enough if the canopy looks almost like the real one :-)

Any help is welcome!

Try Brodak. They may have a spare for the T-Rex.
I may be wrong but I doubt it.

Just a historical note. The original P-47 bubble
canopy was transplanted from a Hawker Typhoon.
I wonder if a Typhoon canopy might be close?

Cheers!

Hi Frank, RSM make a nice P-51 canopy which might suit, if your model's around .35-.46 size. Alternatively, it's not too hard to make your own if you make a balsa mold and use it with a clear PET bottle and a heat gun.

Hello Steve,

my P47 is 60 size at about 60,5" wingspan.
The fuselage has a rather big crosssection, almost scale like.

Park Flyer has all sorts of canopies listed.  You might want to check.  I am sure there will be one there that will fit, like one he has done for a Rabe Sea Fury. Lot of other neat stuff on that site also.

You can use the 9 or 11 and cut to fit.

The BEARCAT & Typhoon / Tempest Canopies were closly related . The P-47s a trifle larger ;
Though the Bearcat is almost a similar shape .

Ive got a plug for a P-47 Razorback & Bubbletop & a dozen others , with a accurate shape -
about the size youre after . But its ' raw ' - unvarnished at the moment .

Razorbacks actually ' teardropped ' at the upper frame line . NOT parrallel sided .

 S?P

Unlike this one .  ??? Its also teardropped at the upper sill , the lowers parrallel for the runners .
Was a plastic 1/48 kit review , lambasting most p-47 kits , bar the one that matched the inaccurate drawings he used .
 VD~
while we're there , we'll have a fit about FRAMES , for some reason the manufacturers at this stage went to great lengths to REDUCE DRAG . Therefore 2 x 4 frames are generally innapropriate , they were darn near FLUSH . ;D

F8F

Tempest

you can see the frame at the windshield chopped square from the F8F , which is more bulbous at the front shut face .
Course the winshields are somewhat differant altogether .

Typhoon

yours for 1499 pounds !  :P

They were refered to as ' Blown ' canopys ( bubble top ) . Somewhat bulbuous , so theyre a ' blown ' teardrop shape ,
for visability & streamlining . These sorta illustrate it .

you can see it narrow fowarrd to the front frame . ;)

Glugg Glugg , fairly original presumeably . . .

started with these funny ' BLOWN ' Malcolm Hoods , for P-47s and Mk III Mustangs .  :P

WOW!
That is some very usefull information!
I will buy the mentioned SIG 9" and 11" WWII canopies
and some canopies from http://parkflyerplastics.com
(Al Rabes BBQ, Bearcat, Mustang etc....)
Then I'll for sure have one that fits well :-)

Thanks everybody for the help!
Especially for the parkflyerplastic link.
And also the picture references are wonderfull.
That might help a lot as I am also unsure what paintjob to do.

Thanks
Frank
