This is my second Stand Off Scale aircraft that uses good mufflers and 40 size aircraft. The actual aircraft is the P-51C Excalibur that is in the Smithsonian Udar Hazy Museum in Washington, DC.
This model P-51C uses leftover items. The wing core was won at a contest in the early 1980's and built in the 1990's. The balsa was what is left over from other aircraft. This aircraft primary use will be a practice aircraft.
Things I learned from building this P-51C:
1. The maroon color was supposed to match the dark red Monocote (per salesman). Do not listen to salesman.
2. I planked the front cowl and rear turtle deck. Forming balsa is a better method.
3. Finish is SIG Dope and Klass Kote Clear.
4. Used Phil Ganderson finishing technique (MA Jan 2007 issue). This is a good system.
5. I learned about making White Letters on the decals (too late for this model).
6. I am not very good applying Monocote.
7. The wing fillets are balsa. It is a good method.
