P-51C Exlalibur
« on: June 13, 2007, 07:07:50 PM »

This is my second Stand Off Scale aircraft that uses good mufflers and 40 size aircraft.  The actual aircraft is the P-51C Excalibur that is in the Smithsonian Udar Hazy Museum in Washington, DC.

This model P-51C uses leftover  items.  The wing core was won at a contest in the early 1980's and built in the 1990's.  The balsa was what is left over from other aircraft.  This aircraft primary use will be a practice aircraft.

Things I learned from building this P-51C:
1.  The maroon color was supposed to match the dark red Monocote (per salesman). Do not listen to salesman.
2.  I planked the front cowl and rear turtle deck.  Forming balsa is a better method.
3.  Finish is SIG Dope and Klass Kote Clear.
4.  Used Phil Ganderson finishing technique (MA Jan 2007 issue).  This is a good system.
5.  I learned about making White Letters on the decals (too late for this model).
6.  I am not very good applying Monocote.
7.  The wing fillets are balsa.  It is a good method.

Model information;
Model Designer: Al Meyers with TM Jennings modifications
Wing Span: 51.0 inches
Asymmetry: 104%
Dihedral:  0.7 in
Wing Area:  555 sq in
Rudder: Rabe Movement
Engine: Fox 40 Deluxe ABC
Engine Displacement: 0.40 cubic inch
Fuel Tank: Sullivan RST 6 ounce (clunk)
Fuel System: Uniflow

The aircraft weights are of interest;
1.  Engine, muffler, prop, spinner, fuel tank      15.8 oz
2.  Complete wing & landing gear system         19.1 oz
3.  Complete fuselage                                    7.4 oz
4.  Engine cowl                                             0.5 oz
5.  Vertical stabilizer & rudder                          0.2 oz
6.  Horizontal stabilizer and elevator                  2.2 oz
7.  Covering and paint                                    5.7 oz
8.  Tip weight                                               0.7 oz

     Total Weight                                          51.6 oz    mw~

The Center of Gravity came out as indicated on the plans, so no additional weight was needed.

Plan to get it into the air this weekend.

Nice mods to the "Meyer's Mustang". y1  I have had those plans for years!  It should be a very good flying plane.

You do know that the original plane was the Paul Mantz Thompson Trophy winner before the airline pilot converted it to the Polar flight "Excaliber", right?

My big Mustang (modified Bob Hunt design) is that plane as Paul's  #46.  I even have the Randolph paint code ofr the original dope used on those planes around here somewhere! ;D

I like the "C". Very nice model. Should be a blast to fly, too.

I've always liked the early P-51 Mustang / Apache modles best. That is a good looking plane-hope it flies great.
Here is a pic of the original-one of my favorites-it looks fast standing ( hanging?) still.
