Oriental Plus building (New pics 11/30)
« on: March 22, 2009, 12:29:47 PM »
Now that I have the foam wing from Bob Hunt, and got it sheeted today, I figured I'd post what I have done.  Right now, I have no complaints about construction, besides the planking on the first wing.

One thing I am going to have to do is add 1/2 inch to the bottom of fuselage so the landing gear will be able to still be fuse mounted and cut out former F-5 for a larger pipe tunnel.

Thanks Bob for cutting the foam wing.  First time molding for me, and it won't be my last.  #^

Ok Matt....you framed up your Aries and posted all the pics of the build, then you painted and detailed it and posted all those pics.  Now your starting in on this Oriental....Plus of course!.....and I have a bone to pick with you!  You have no right building stuff at a craftsman level, and painting better than a guy (not me by the way, but a "friend" of mine) that has been building for more than 30 years!  Now I want you to slow down, drip glue and paint all over the place, build a crooked fuse and generally ugly this build up a little!!  Oh yeah....and get out there and learn how to crash properly like me.....I mean my "friend" and stop embarrassing me....I mean my "friend"!!

ps....did I tell you that the build is looking very nice? H^^

Looks great, Matt. You seem to have taken to model building like a duck to water. You're a natural. Keep the pics comming, we really enjoy them. #^

Matt;  if you take to flying like you have building you will be an expert in no time.  I just hope you don't burn your self out like some people I have known thru the years.

In fact one fellow I flew with was going to start in beginner untill I seem him fly.  In that one day he was flying the whole pattern and flying better than I could.  He also was building everything he could get his hands on.  First contest he got first in Intermediate.  After a year he moved up to Advance and was doing great.  He was ready for Expert when he quit flying.  Just wish I could get him back out as he could build and fly.

By the way did I tell you the construction looks great.  DOC Holliday

Take advantage of being young. The younger flyers seem to advance at a faster rate, probably due to the fact that their reflexes are sharper and they still have really good vision. I'm not quite 40 but small things are starting to get fuzzy these days. Keep it up Matt.

I started flying in 2005.  My first competition flight was Memorial Day weekend in 2007.  I got booted up to intermediate at the next contest.  My first meet in intermediate was in Flushing in 2008, I came in 4th.  Next came Lee where I got booted to intermediate, and got a score of 543 only because one judge scored me in 38s and 39s, the other judge had me in the 480s.  When I went to Lee again a month later, I flew with the advanced guys, and had second most of the day.  Since I registered as an intermediate, I was able to fly for the Mass Cup.  I improved 15 points from my best flight earlier in the day, 470 to a 485 and that flight would have won me advanced if I was flying in advanced since the top advanced flyer had a 480.  Now I know my first contest I enter, I will be flying in advanced.

Well there really isn't anything new with this plane, but everything is done except the fuselage.  Attached is a couple of pictures of the completed wing.

Edit: I just read through it, and there is something new.  Instead of me originally powering it with an OPS 40, it is now going to be a PA 40UL

Matt,
I also fly the Oriental Plus plus power is a Ro-Jett .40 on pipe. I fly with Dee Rice the designer of the OP, and a week ago I flew one that had a LA .46 for power and a carbon prop. I could not tell the difference between the Ro-Jett or LA .46. They have the same prop and seem to have the same amount of power. You are going to be very pleased in the performance of this plane you will find that it grooves very well. Little effort is necessary to make the airplane turn and corner. I highly recommend this plane. I'm currently building another for next year and will hopefully compete at the NATS with it.

Regards,
 ;D

Hi Stephen,

My original plan was to compete at this year's Nats with this plane, but we decided to go Brodak instead, which meant I didn't have a deadline to finish this plane.  I will finish constructing the fuselage as soon as I get the wing done on my Cobra, which could be a week or more.

With this plane I'm going to aim for a front row finish, because for one, I really like the paint scheme I came up with for it, there are solid surfaces on this plane, and I want to pursue it.

thanks Dennis, I don't know what to do with the stab and elevator, because I'm not sure I want to copy the trim scheme on the wing, since that is a much smaller surface.

Well, here's one idea - just doodled on your doodle a little. As long as your painting the back end red... and white is heavy anyways, you could reverse the wing scheme onto the stab and elev and eliminate the checkers to keep it simple. Or you could just do the whole tail red,  find some of Kent Tysors Strega pics for inspiration along that line, his plane looks good that way with similar side view as you have drawn.

Thanks Eric, I'm leaning towards leaving the whole tail red, but don't forget, I still have to finish building the fuselage.  But that is the paint scheme I am going to use, minus what I came up with for the tail.

Hi guys,

I set the Cobra aside to work on the Oriental Plus.  I now have the engine mounted in the fuselage, and glued the front nose block on.  I have decided not to make a cowl for this plane, but instead extend the fuselage sides and make it look like a cowl.  For one it is easier to do and the motor and pipe will get plenty of cooling.

Pics may come in the next two days so stay tuned

Good idea Matt,  I am going to do the same to the "Arctic Fox".  Talked to Leo(the designer) yesterday and he agreed with me.  Need to get it in the air as I now have the parts for the B-40.  Have fun,  DOC Holliday

Thanks DOC,

After using blocks for the Ares I quickly came to dislike carving.  I think this is almost like killing two birds with one stone, motor gets plenty of cooling, and it looks like a cowl on the profile

Today I put some clear on the flaps, stab, elevators, rudder, and wheelpants.  I wrapped the planking on the top of the fuselage today, just need it to dry before I glue it on the fuse.  Didn't shoot any pics, maybe tomorrow if I work on it.

Looks like it's coming along well, Matt. Should be a good one for you.

One question for a picture toward the top. How are the leadouts attached to the bellcrank?

Hi Randy,

The leadouts are attached the conventional way, copper wire, and saulder.  The wire was drawn through the hole in the bellcrank and then wrapped with copper and sauldered.

I guess I'm kind of slow on building but I now have an update.  I got the top of the fuselage shaped and is looking good.  I need to fill some gouges from digging a little too much on the planer and this one low spot that came from me not wrapping the wood round.

I did take a pic of it, but can't post it since I'm at home and we went flying today (modeling this time ;D , but I wasn't too happy with my performance today, some low bottoms believe it or not, and popping up on some bottoms).

I'll see if I can post a pic tomorrow. H^^

Just my humble opinion but I'd be using ball links and a shaft rather than a piece of wire for bellcrank to flap controls
(also ball links & shaft for flap to elevator). I 'm impressed with the rest of your build though.

I'd love to have a 20 pointer, and i'm going to try for a really good finish with this plane.   The whole tail is going to be red instead of the trim on the wings, I also got some details I'll make decals out of, secret stuff ;D

Well it's starting to look like an airplane.  Today I put the wing in the fuse, everything has silkspan on.  I was going to put Carbon fiber on the fuse but we didn't have enough :P .  All I need to do besides put everything together and put the controls in is to make the pipe tunnel.  Since a 1 inch header doesn't clear a 6 ounce plastic sullivan tank, we have to put in a 1 1/4 inch header so the fuselage will be a little deeper than normal.  We had to put the wing in first because grandpa is going to show me how to wrap 1/64 plywood into a semi-circle for a tunnel.

Oh and I still need to make the cowl.

Here is a pic (I know, finally)  H^^

Edit:  Now comes the part I like best in building an airplane, the finish!!!!!! #^

Looks good Stephen, today we are going to make up the pushrod and maybe get the stab in.  But I need to measure the stab, inboard and outboard, that way I won't make the same mistake as I did with the Ares (outboard stab was longer than inboard, but then we lengthened the inboard, no wonder it flies so well!)

That would be a first.  I got my foam wing cut by Bob Hunt with the molded leading edge, so it should already fly good as long as I don't screw up and of the critical alignment.

Last night, we made up the pushrod for the Oriental Plus.  For anybody that is going to put in a Ball link for controls, you better grind out the bushing that is in the control horn before you put it in the plane.  The reason you would need to grind it is because a 4-40 bolt is too thick to squeeze through one of RSM's horns with the bushing in it.  The stab is at least mounted, but not glued in yet.  Today, I may get the stab mounted.

You are correct Richard. It's going to work great lite weight and very strong.....
I see many more of these wings in the future once I get some direction from Dee and see how he builds them first hand. Hopfully this will be my NATS plane for next year I'm hoping to go, but next year I will be traveling a lot for work we were awarded a big project in Kail Indonisia on Batam Island.... and very close to winning a project in Russia as well.....

Matt your are right and I even had to grind a little off of the ball joint as well.

We never ground part of the ball joint off, but had to carve a sliver of the saulder off where the flap pushrod is.

Today, we got the stab mounted, and after spending about 20-30 minutes eyeballing the stab to see if was level, we finally got it right.  And I started to make up the tail block, until I found out half of it had to be cut away for the rudder, and then I decided to stop since I had to get back home for dinner.  Didn't get to shoot a pic since I had to get back and was busy today.

Update:  Made the pipe tunnel last night, and it was very easy to do with the 1/64 plywood method grandpa uses.  He did get this idea from Vic Macaluso, who told him to make a tunnel this way, rather than building a box around the pipe.

I did take a couple pics but didn't have time to post them.  Today, I may or may not get the landing gear mounted, or maybe even get the rudder mounted.

What you took time for dinner?  Oh the horors of it.  I can remember Mom telling me if I didn't get to the table I would have a cold dinner.  No micro wave back then.  Keep having fun,  DOC Holliday
