Ok, having to rethink what I build in NYC
« on: July 25, 2009, 10:37:41 PM »
Ok, as I said I'm going to have to go to NYC to take care of my Mom. that means I will have to start a whole new project there. And I won't have much in the way of tools. So here is my question. Would either the hunter stunter or the small pathfinder be decent choices for an .09 ? I know the miss ashlee is way too small for an .09 at 24"

I'm suprised that nobody has made any suggestions on a model to build.
1. must be smallish..(25-40) inch wingspan
                           200-300 square inches.
2....  basically as complete or as close too complete as possible.

3. I'm shooting to try  and keep it to .09 though I may consider an os or enya  .15 depending in both price and availability.

4. I wont have access to a lot of stuff to work with. So a scratch built I think is out and If the model can either be precut as a short kit or better than short kit would be fine.
What I would like is a stunt capable model. Preferable a fairly easy build using epoxy and white glue for assembly and,  finished with future wax and Limited painting.
5. So far Here is the models I'm leaning towards today.
(I leave for NYC on Aug 5)
In no particular order here are my current models of interest.
midwest P-39/63 from l. richards
ringmaster 207 if i can get a kit/
1/2A pathfinder
cheap trick..maybe
6. model must be anle to be launched from a stooge on a blacktop circle.

---------------------------------------------
some stuff i have questions on.
If the enya .15 is economical on fuel how many ounces does it need to run the pattern?
Is the os la .15 available as a cl engine from anybody?
How does the os .15 la compare to the enya .15 and tha ap .09?
prop size for a .15 compared to the .09? is it like an 8" vs a 7" or more difference there.

Jim,  you need to go into the archives and do some searching.  How long are you going to be in NYC?  In reality any NYC people here to help him out?   When I was flown to a chool or work location because they wouldn't let me drive, I took all kinds of reading material.  I also checked to see if other modelers might be close.  Got to go to some club meetings that way as well as visiting hobby shops.  I have so many questions to ask you.  DOC Holliday

I really think you should consider a Sig Akromaster.  I've built 2 of them and they go together well.  Just follow Sig's wing instructions exactly.  You don't need a jig, just a flat surface, and the parts all fit.  The little airplane flies well and it's less than $30 if you look around.  Since you are heading to NY, check out Virginia Hobbysports.  They are south of DC and are really great people to deal with.  When you call them you get a real person.  http://www.virginiahobbysport.com/     866-FLY-UCON

I never traveled without my PAMPA directory. Make a call and you have a friend.

Windy and the Garden State Circle Burners are just across the River in N.J.
There is also an active group that flies in Flushing Meadows.

There are many people in these groups that will have planes for you to fly.

Look, you've got a club that flies Stunt at Flushing Meadows park in Queens, they fly full sized Stunt Planes, some are even overweight, pretty and bizarrely painted. I grew up in Manhattan and built Sterling and Top Flight kits. We lived in an apartment. Tiny rooms (if you're used to a house...) But it seemed spacious enough to me. The issue really is the work surface on which you will build. I live (part time) on the Lower East Side, Manhattan, Grand and Essex Street. These days I take my stunt planes up the elevator in the NYC apartment, two planes at a time. Everyone has been kind enough to make way. So far. Nothing was ever stepped on or accidentally poked. Seems whatever Mom allows will fit in the apartment where you live. Storage on the other hand might be an issue. Where will you be staying. Drop me a private message and I'll see what I can do to help you out. It's New York. Granted CL planes are old fashioned and rare. Have no fear tho, you can walk down the street with your CL treasure without being thought strange.  It's NY, what goes for the out of the ordinary elsewhere is commonplace and overlooked.

Might be a problem with the odor of CA. Use white glue then. Get a fan. Monokote and Nelsen paint won't smell bad.

Will you have a car? If you plan to have one in NY it will be a constant preoccupation and challenge. Two parking tickets (at least $100 a piece) and you get towed. Good for another $400 in charges at least. (If you pay right away, otherwise the cost will go up up up and away.) The parking rules are byzantine. Hard to believe how many ways you can interpret the meaning of parking signs in NYC. If you're from out of town. Forget it. Ask a local to explain what the sign means. Also, watch out for movie shoots. They're common. Seems it's legal for them to post signs reserving entire streets at a time for a shoot. Those signs can go up suddenly. If you fail to see one they tow your car someplace or other. It'll be up to you to find out where.

When I was flying Flushing meadows park in and around 1974. I'd travel on the rr to the number 7 train and walk from Wilits point station to the field. I did this for at least a year then I got a bicycle and rode with my plane attached on my handle bars.
I leardned a lot from Dick Kurt as far as just getting plane to fly. I also watched quite a few other whom flew there.
Rene' mitichim (sp)
Gene Schaffer
Big Jim

are just a few of the flyers I talked to and watched most weekends.
Doc, if you have questions you can always email me.

Guess you're just concerned about space. Sounds like you know something about NYC. LA15s can be had in CL configuration or converted easy enough. Using FP15 needle valves and venturis. Available from Tower. Or elsewhere. LA25s run sweet and are CL configured. Are you getting back into the hobby? Modern engines runs better than the old engines, when muffled. IMHO. AHC is a disaster. No CL anymore. When I was a kid, 45 years ago, I bought my CL supplies and planes, there. If you have a car, Garden State Circle burners are about half an hour outside NYC. The folks who fly at Flushing are easy enough to get in touch with.
