If it was sealed and kept away from exposure to sunlight, it is probably fine to use. Nitromethane is not Hydroscopic (affinity to attract water/moisture out of the air) like Methanol. Nitromethane is naturally water clear, including "Chinese White" which is what Torco sells. Nitro that is yellow is not necessarily contaminated. Racing organizations such as NHRA require that supplied Nitro have a chemical agent added that is naturally yellow. The (yellow) agent turns the solution bright purple if it is mixed with any destabilizing agents/chemicals like Hydrazine. This is to alert the user and/or race officials that the Nitro has likely become "shock sensitive" and should be disposed of accordingly. The yellow agent does not have any detrimental effect on use for model engine fuel other than color. If you have seen nitro that was "reddish yellow and full of crap" it wasn't a manufacturing location or brand related issue. It was contaminated somewhere (distributor, vendor, or other end user)

You might first try it in your 1/4-mile drag racer to see if it is OK.

Just remember, Nitro used improperly tends to cause "re-kitting" of automobile engines. Plus, they drink a hell of a lot of it. Just to run 50% in the coupe we went from a 5 gallon Moon tank to a 10 gallon Moon tank.

Howard liked to use old nitro in his Lawnboy lawnmower. Now, his lawnmowing in "farmed out", so to speak. Apparently, his Lawnboy didn't run right on the replacement parts he printed.   LL~ Steve

It has become quite difficult to obtain 100% Nitromethane due to Federal restrictions on the sale and storage, making it not a viable (profitable) commodity for small shops.
The good news is you can buy 50-50 (50% Nitro-50% Methanol) in sealed 5 gallon cans from any dealer who sells VP Race Fuel products (So Cal Race Fuels if you're in So Cal). A little simple math and you're in business. This works for every mix you need unless you were running more than 40% Nitro since most run at least 20% total oil. It is actually far cheaper than buying straight Nitro do to all the regs and restrictions on the later.

Easiest way is to order it as already mixed in the fuel.  Mine I get from Red Max.

Yeah, actually the OP was asking about Nitromethane, not where to buy pre-mixed fuel.

Knowing Gill...I bet when it was opened in 2017 and a bit used he put it away secure cap and back in a dark area

So to answer the OP question --""---has been opened and fuel mixed from it, I bought it in Aug of '17, is it still good? ---""-

Gill I say blend up a pint of 25% and your favorite oil mix and compare in a Cox Medallion against your other fuel where the quality of the Nitro is NOT in question

I am betting the blend with the 2017 Nitro with start and needle the same as your other blend

On the European side of things....
Nitromethane was already regulated, with a limit on what percentage mixture you could have without a Permit. Early 2021, that will go down to 16% by weight which is about 12% by volume (I think).
