When I joined the GSCB in 1989, Tom Niebuhr declared that flying on New Years Day was a tradition started by Larry Scarinzi....Larry, of course, disavowed it. But every New Years Day (but one...four years ago I was in on a flight and couldn't fly until the 2nd) I have flown a control line plane.....all but the plane flown on the 2nd FOX .35 powered......in temperatures as low as 6*F!

By the first, the Christmas treats are pretty stale, but they taste pretty good when it's cold outside.

The GSCB will continue the tradition for 2015, beginning at 9:30.

I will be flying here in Paradise at the MCRC field in Ellenton at 10:00...I'll bring a jug of DD coffee!

What other groups traditionally fly on January 1st?

The Cholla Choppers MAC in Tucson usually do. Of course it's easier for us because it's usually about 70 degrees!

The Piston Poppers in Minneapolis have a club "Frozen Fun Fly" event every New Years Day at 11:00AM. It must be a "thick skulled" Minnesota thing in that it's typically our best attended club event each year. Everyone who actually puts up a flight gets a raffle ticket for multiple prize drawings that are held immediately after the flying is finished. Prizes are donated by a local hobby shop and usually a couple of our C/L hobby suppliers. A couple of dedicated club members also provide a piping hot kettle of chili and some hot chocolate in an attempt to keep the blood flowing. It's looking like it might be a New Years Day with single digit temps again this year, but we'll be out there!

The Portland Oregon clubs host a New Years day fun fly every year. This year it will be hosted by the Aeroliners club. See Flying Lines for the details.

The Dallas Model Aircraft Association began the tradition in 1997 when Tom Niebuhr moved here. That first year, instead of seeing how many airplanes we could get up at once, we passed the handle around and had something like 14 different people fly a plane on the same flight. I have the picture in front of me on the wall right now.

I used to go join the TOPClass group in Topeka KS on New Years day and put in some flights. My knees and hip have told me to stay home the last few years. They also have a New Years Eve flight in which they try to start as many planes as they can and fly just before Midnight and over into the New Year. Then they go some where for hot beverages afterwards. I have not participated in that adventure. So every one have an early HAPPY NEW YEAR.

The Laffayette Esquadrille in St Louis fly on New Year's Day. They participate in the AMA "All Seasons Flyer" program which requires flights each month of the year. Flying on New Years kicks off the new year and gets January out of the way

Rich, I'm sure your quite aware that the Philly group usually partakes in a similar tradition. I just hope that a shovel isn't the prerequisite of the day. I found some shots last evening of my Shawn and Danny Slobbing it up with 2 in the circle. None of us want to commit to hanging up the planes for the next few months. Ken

Guilty as charged for GSCB and Dallas. The first time in Dallas I challenged everyone to fly no matter what the weather was. That first day we had nice warm weather. Since then we have had the typical variety of weather from the teens to the 60s, wind, rain.. but we have done it every year.

Over the last 10 or more years it is also a tradition for Dave Ek to fly the newest version of his flying ceiling fan.. To date none have made it past a lap! This is very entertaining. Dave has also had very good flights on his V-22 Osprey.. No matter what the weather we always look forward to going to Chubby's restaurant for coffee, breakfast or lunch and great B.S.

I've got my used ARF Streak that I got at the swap meet all ready to go , I have my fingers crossed that I don't get to stomach bug that's going around. This will be my third New Years Day at the GSCB hopefully warmer than last year! T.J.

I'm afraid New Years day here means temps in the range of -35 to -40 C....or -40F which is the same

The weather isn't looking too bad for New Years Day at Buder Park. The temps will be just above freezing, but winds should be light and that is the big thing for me. I'm making plans for being there January 1, 2015.

We're supposed to fly a Boone Park in Flint Mi. at noon.The weather man(#*%$*(#%)says sustained winds of 20 to 25 MPH with gusts to 45 and a high temp of 24.Might put a damper in the flight schedule.Supposed to calm down by the weekend.......Might have to wait til' then

Heck Steve, I just checked again and things are looking up! For 11:00am it says a balmy 16 degrees with a nice 13 mph breeze to keep us comfortable!

I took the 'ol Shoestring off the wall tonight (for the first time since last January 1st) and burped the Fox about six times to bring'er back to life. Then I performed the tedious annual inspection and flight prep by adding a couple new rubber bands to the fuel tank and I think we're ready for 2015.

St Louis (Buder Park) was cold and windy but myself, John Moll, Steve Smith, Dan McEntee and Bob Arata all got flights in today to start off the 2015 season

I talked to Larry Scarinzi yesterday, and he told me that someone in a four wheel drive vehicle got into the GSCB flying field and literally tore all the sod off of 2 of the 3 circles. The front circle had been partially covered with water, so it received less damage. The GSCB club isn't happy about this, and doesn't know how much money it will cost to repair the damage.

I don't know if they had the new year's fly in at their field today.

Here I am launching Len's Ringmaster/Fox 35. We put a Randy Smith Fox NVA assembly into it and Len was able to fly a full tank for the first time!
Great fun, temps a bit on the chilly side (mid-60*s), but a great day!

They did have their annual fly. I attended and put up some flights with Scarinzi and others. We managed to fly on the first circle as half of it was decent enough to land on. Other circles are pretty bad. Despite conditions we had a boat load of fun!

We had a good time despite what some idiot did to the field fortunately the tire ruts are only in the sod . I will have to admit the electric flyers already had their lines rolled up and their planes back in their cars and I was still trying to get my needle set right but it was still a lot of fun.T.J.

Is that Doug B in the blue cap sitting down? It was pretty cold for the Philly crowd. Unfortunately, not much flying as the winds were up in the 15-20 mph range. We had a good turn out and we have Larry Wilks to thank for providing lunch with the Coleman stove . Hot chocolate was good. No spoon so the broken prop was the stirrer.
