New Stearman
« on: January 11, 2010, 05:12:52 AM »
I bought these plans three years ago waiting to get my other planes built that I needed for contest. In December, I got the plans out and finally Started. It is a beautiful frame and what I am told by several pilots, it is also a very good flier.  IT is the Stearman from Flying Models plans service. Stay warm ! And dry. (we had a bad water leak this weekend, not much fun)

Beautiful work Terry; I have always loved Stearmans, just never had the courage to build one. It will not only be fun to fly, but one you just grab a cup of coffee, and sit and look at. A true work of art. ... Sorry about your water problem. We had one of those last year when our water line broke just outside the house, and it finally worked its way through the basement wall where the line comes through. Caught it early though, and it did not do much damage.

Is that the Don Hutchinson design?  They fly really well, too.  Here's a photo of one of Don's in action...

Wow Terry,
I think you should just cover it with clear and let us always see the fine workmanship in side!!!  That's really, really nice!

Thanks guys for the kind words. Yep, it's Don's Plans and what a great designer he is. As far as what paint scheme, I go back and forth between The blue fus and the all yellow plane. Don sent me some scale paint scheme drawings today and two dash boards to help me along. This barrell fus ought to be a fun day to cover. I will keep you posted with pics. Stay warm!    Terry .

Just cover it like you would have if it was a rubber powered plane using tissue and dope.   LL~ LL~

Here's a cool paint job on a Stearman. That's my brother Hugh working on it. He's a retired Rockit Scientist, and now mostly does electrical refurb for an A&E friend of his, out at Inyokern Airport, CA. I might be able to scrounge more pictures of this one. It has a full cowl, which would be rilly nice. The guy that owns it flew the glider tug (Pawnee) for my brother's glider consortium there, and he flies CL a bit as an ol' sport flier...but I can't recall his name. If you want more pictures of this'n, holla!   y1 Steve

Thanks for the offer but I think I will go traditional colors this time and I have a radial engine from Williams bros for the front so no cowl on this one. Thanks Guys!   Terry

Phil, that Stearman is beautiful! I framed in the Sterling CL Stearman years ago, that was a rough little kit. By then, most items were "Mash cut" .
Was your  RC kit a pretty good quality? You sure did a good job.
Thanks, Terry

Terry,

I framed up that kit in the early 70's and never covered it till the middle 80's.  As with many of the Sterling kits, it was rough. I put an OS FS90 in it and it was a great flyer.  I finally passed it on to one of the club members here in Florida and it is still flying.

Yup that is the way a biplane should look. Nice paint . What scale Williams bros engine will you use with Dons stearman. That is designed around OS 40 ? What is the finshed weight target ? Nice project , on my long list for sure . Too cool . Whats holding the top wing up right now ?

Oh ....I see ,you mean the ones on a string ?

Phil, a very nice model and finish. I build several Sterling kits in the 70's and 80's but nothing RC  so I can imagine how much work that kit was.
Greg, I hope to be around 44 oz. finished but this is the first one of these for me so I'm not sure at all....yet. The motor at this time is gonna be a os 46 with Jim Lee (Lee machine)parts installed. Jim has fixed me up with parts for two other OS that are just flawless. The Top wing is actually sitting on the cabane Struts in the middle. I made some fixtures to hold alignment until dry and wing is sitting on those only. I have the "N" Struts made but am thinking about changing something on those. I don't work on it much until the weekend so no forward progress during the week. Saturday I hope to make the tank and lead outs, then on to finish the fus.
