New Ringmaster, finally ..
« on: May 24, 2009, 07:46:53 PM »
Ever since I got back into control-line around 12 years ago,  I been saying I gotta build me a Ringmaster.  Couple of reasons.  Frist, our club's name is the "New Orleans Ringmasters". (clubs namesake makes it almost mandatory to have a Ringmaster)  Second, like a lot of retreads, that's the model I built the most of as a teenager (probalby 4 or 5) and this was going to be my nostalgia bird.  It was suppose to have a McCoy 35 RedHead (that's all I could afford back then).  Seeing what Dee Rice and the Brotherhood are doing with Ringmasters these days I opted for Brodak 25 power.
Well today I made the first flights on my latest version, and it performs like none of teenage variants ever dreamed of.  Of course I know a little more about building and flying today than I did back then.  This one came in at 24.8 oz as you see it in the pictures.  Gotta think that the teenage versions were all 35+ (and that's without mufflers).  Built it from a Dee Rice / Pat Johnston Gold Label kit.  Got all the good scoop from Dee on bench trim and set up and she flew great from the git go.  Only mod I made was to hollow out the back side of the kit supplied solid leading edge.  Oh yea, one other mod, check out the push rod exit in the last picture.
This is fun stuff, now I have to build another one for the true nostalgia bird and put the McCoy on it.

Allan,

For the McCoy version to be authentic you need to use a diamond shaped Ambroid glue tube top as the pushrod guide.  ;D

Great looking Ringmaster!

Nice looking Ringy. Simple, fun paint scheme. I like the hinges too.

Not much "paint" on this one (only the black tips).

That is really cool Allan; I have one with the Red Head 35 that weighs 29oz. We have to weigh them now you know. I know the BrodaK 25 is an excellent engine for it, but the McCoy will make you smile and works pretty well also.

Thats a keeper Allan! Nice scheme and lines too.
Just curious though, how much of the solid LE did you hollow out? Dee and Pat made this one to withstand (mostly) the infamous outboard wing shearing phenominon. The RSM designed LE was too flimsy(sp) at the fuse joint, and enlisted the solid one to help in their Gold Medal version. But, even the solid ones can shear off, given the conditions (Texas weather)!!  LL~
Nice job!

Nice job!
I tilted the blade on my table saw to about 15 deg, ran the LE's thru on each side to take out a triangle.  In the center section, I glued in 1/32 ply on each side of triangle, then glued back in the balsa triangle that was cut out, sanded that flush with back edge and then glued on the standard 1/16 ply doubler.      Might have a picture.
Yep found some.

I have headers for 2 different side exhaust engines,  Magnum XLS 36 and Enya 40XZS.  Going to set up the front end with aluminum motor plates to allow for easy engine changes.  The headers go straight back like a tube muffler, not the side to rear type of header.  Using a standard profile nose contstuction will tuck the pipe in under the wing just like you did.  So I will not have use the angled beam mounts.
