New Ride for VSC 2024
« on: February 16, 2024, 11:10:39 PM »
Just finishing up a Jim Silhavy Gypsy for next month's Vintage Stunt Championships.  Built from the Brodak kit based on Jim's 1968 version, I chose to mimic the color scheme from the first design of the series, built in 1965.  Attached two pix of mine plus the only color pix I can find of Jim's original.  Per Wynn Paul's Stunt History book, Jim did not actually name this series of designs until the 1968 version.

51 oz, Brodak 2826 motor, Bad Ass 11x6P prop, 4Sx3500, Castle Phoenix ESC & Hubin FM9 timer.  Will fly on 64' 0f FINS Spin 65# Spectra. Now, if I can only get some test flights before leaving for Tucson...

John S - THANKS!

Dave R: Yup, guaranteed to cover in a single kote, no brush marks, no overspray, no lead in the pigments, extremely low VOC (except for the Windex under the stripes) easy clean-up using a broom & vac!

Will - THANKS, but ain't nearly as cool as YOUR new ride!

WW- there is a lot to what you say, I like it when I can do a Classic bird that mimics the original, especially since not many people remember this one.  His original was around 600 squares and powered by a Fox, the Brodak kit is of the later 40-46 size version.  Jim eventually crashed it in the wind at a meet in Detroit.  We had heard rumors that some folks were making wings out of Styrofoam - and there it was!  Only it wasn't the light with "popcorn" foam, but rather the blue homogenous foam with just enough cored out to pass the leadouts.  Yup, that airplane was heavier than most!  Jim was an incredible builder. My dad kept one half of the crashed stabilizer pined to the wall behind his lathe - a source of inspiration to build better!

Doc: THANKS.  One thing I want to focus on, NOBODY ever did triangles better than Jim Silhavy!  When my dad was judging or coaching, if he told you your Triangles reminded him of Silhavy - that was about the highest praise you could hear...

Sheesz I sound old...

I am using Spin5 65# on my MoBest at 55oz & 58 oz Velvet 5, so I am confident it will work well on the 51oz. Gypsy

I surmised that 5-strand Spin 5 would be rounder than the 4-strand Windtamer; however, I really cannot say that's the case.  Spin5 65# is .014", Windtamer 65# is .015".  That also is not much difference.  Spin5 is only available up to 65# so when I wanted 100# line I got Windtamer and I am completely happy with it.

Dennis, have you used the 100# Power Pro?  If so does Windtamer have less drag?  Where do you get the 100#, all I can seem to find is 80#.  I fly my profile on 85# but I don't trust it yet for my real planes.

Please apologize to your PointsFinder for me. Sorry if I hurt it's feelings.  My comment was directed at my own profile that simply refuses to fly like it's a full body.  I am probably at fault for even expecting it.

Hi Ken

Gonna be "drifting" my own thread, but here's a long answer to your short question!

I started using PP original 100# when I first tried Spectra on a then 72 oz SV11 ARF.  It worked very well, clearly better than SS cables in my estimation.  I started there because that is what the Combat guys were using. I accumulated several other lines including PP Slick 8, PP Maxcuatro, Suffix 821, SpiderWire, & FINS XS (8 strand).  Among those brands I had a mix of 15#, 20# 40# 45#, 50# 65# 80# & 100#!!! All that I tried worked well, but I at first decided to cut back my lunacy and concentrate on the Maxcuatro. I got some 50# & 80#, then started hearing that people were getting "gamed" especially through eBay with counterfeit material.

Could be I'm fatalistic about it, but on a 100# line I am doing the stretch at 50# per line, meaning that my lines are actually tested at 100# per set before I put them on the airplane.  That is what got me over the hump on whther to "trust" the Spectra in place of SS Cable!  I contend that the

Looking for alternatives i settled on the FINS brands (finsfishing.com), because it is American made, and available direct from the factory in KY.  That took a lot of the guesswork out of authenticity of product.  FINS also offers a plethora of product!  By going factory direct you can of course get EVERY size they make, not just the ones that a retail shop can afford to stock.  You asked about 100# test, they have that, and Windtamer line is also available in 150# & 200# - can you say "Spectra Leadouts?"  In one of your other posts you said something about your spectra lines "blowing in the wind" - the Windtamer product is also coated with something that gives it a little more body - the claim for fishermen is that Windtamer is less prone to nesting into wind knots or tangling around the tip of a fishing rod.

Anther thing I noticed is that when going one size up or down the diameter of the line only changes by .001 or so.  If I was flying a speed model that would matter more, but I think there are limited paybacks to obsessing over that on a stunt plane.  The enemy is stretch, not line drag!

I have used up the 80# Maxcuatro I had, still have some 50# Maxcuatro on hand but when it is gone I will not replace it.  I also will not be using so many different sizes. In round numbers I will be back to essentially 3-4 sizes for most everything:

FINS 40G 45# (.009") for just about everything up to 40 oz  (ie, we used to use .008" to .012" SS cables here)
FINS SPIN5 65# (.014") for 40oz-60oz (where we used to use .015" SS cables)
FINS Windtamer 100# (.017") for anything over 60oz  (.018" SS cable apps)

BTW, I used to buy my welded rings for the Spectra line ends from Tackle Direct but they are slow to resupply.  Last night I ordered a new batch direct from the factory at SPRO.com

How did you do your hinges Denny?

Hi John
I used regular plastic pinned hinges and use the monokote covering between the hinges to seal the hingeline gap.  I do not have any pictures handy to share but I have a project in the works that I'll use to document my process.  That will go in a different thread, I'll keep you advised...

Test flights before VSC?  Hope you do.  I'm going with zero flights since last year's VSC.  Lost flying site.  Sad as have  plane built 7 years ago 5 flights and one 5 years old 4 flights.  Both close to trim, but need more flights.

That sounds really tough, would be very hard to maintain the hobby that way.  Looing forward to chatting some more in Tucson.

Bill:
Not many build pictures, Main reason I built this was that I designed an electric conversion (stock #BH=1939) for the Brodak kit, and built the airplane so I could write the Assembly Manual for the conversion - the only pix I have are related to the conversion; that is the forward fuslage plus a notch built into the wing to push the battery aft...

Late to the party on this one Little Brother, but I must admit, that's a looker! Wish I could have ade the trip this year to VSC, as I have a brand new Caprice ready to go.

I have always loved the looks of the Gypsy, especially the rear turtle deck shape; so subtle! I remember perusing over Jim's red Gypsy that Rene Mechin had for a while at his apartment in New York City. As I heard the story, when Rene passed away that Gypsy ended up with Big Jim Greenaway and was subsequently lost in a fire. Perhaps Jose Modesto could chime in here and confirm or update that story. At any rate, the inside of Jim's Gypsy cowling was better finished than most 20 pointers at any Nats! Really, it was amazing.  y1

Kick butt in Tucson old buddy!

Bob & Jose - THANKS

Jim was a phenomenal builder, and the red Gypsy stood out as the best (or at least my favorites) of his airplanes.  I do not think Jim was very happy with it because I only remember seeing it at the 66 NATs.  Also remember he asked George Aldrich to fly the red airplane because he could not figure out what was wrong with it.  Jim was back to flying the blue Gypsy again in 67.

BTW I have a couple patterns on mine - and I LIKE it!
