It was about time!!!!
« on: March 26, 2012, 07:40:34 PM »
March and April are the two hardest months to find a weekend when the wind is not blowing or what I call gusty.
This afternoon after work it was as good as it gets this time of year. I am not sure why but the wind direction always blows in a direction where you are looking into the sun when stunting.  HB~>

Anyway I change out my LA 46 on my Tutor II with my new ebay LA 46 with a Randy Smith NVA. I think this engine is going to be a keeper. I did want to try a 12.25x3.75 APC prop also.

First flight was kind of soft on the lines running @ around 9100.
Second flight was launched at 9700. Half way into the flight I started to hear a rattling nose and then the engine started to sag and then quit. I called my Tech support guy and he explained what happened.

I went back to my old prop, 11x4 APC and got in two patterens. I was a little rusty but it felt good to burn some fuel.

Things I learned:
* Don't load up a brand new engine with too much prop. And look at what size plane you are asking the engine to haul. Size does matter. LL~

Something I'm not to sure about.
* I am using a lot less fuel. And I mean a lot less. I was using about 4.5 oz with my other LA 46, this one is using about 3 oz. Both have FP 40 venturi's. The only difference is one had a stock OS front NVA the new engine has the Randy Smith NVA. I like it. ;)

Hi Paul,If the new NVA has a larger diameter than the stock OS NVA it will let in less air and burn less fuel.Jeff

Hey Jeff,
I did have to drill out for the NVA.

Make sense.

Well I think I got a 5oz tank on this plane and it was about 1/2 full. I will try and get a good measurement next time out. But I know before I would fill it so that the fuel was just up past the back corner of the tank. Last flight was just a tad past 1/2 way on the tank and I still flew a bunch of laps after the pattern.

Still trying to get the engine broken in, but once I do I will get the numbers on the fuel. More to follow.......

HI Rootbeard,

With that size airplane and that size prop (12 1/4 X 3 3/4) you might need a bigger venturi.  It will probably work great on a smaller size model like the Vector or a Classic model.
