New Mk III Crossfire XL
«

Chris Cox and I have built Bob Hunt's Crossfire design for the past 4 years. I think that we were the first to build the Crossfire Extreme in the winter of 2011-2012. The next year we decided to go to a "lost foam" built up wing and I also changed to a built up stab/elev. assy. We also went to 3/4" asymmetry in the wing. This became our Mk-I version. Last year we made a few more changes with a slight reduction in overall flap area while increasing the outboard flap area. We also changed from the E-flite 32 motor to the Cobra 3520/12 motor while retaining the Castle Phoenix 60 ESC and Hubin FM9 timer. This years model underwent even more changes, with an increase of wing area to 660 sq. in., a increase in the tail moment and a reduction in the aspect ratio of the stab./elev. assy. while retaining the area. The swept forward flap hinge line was straightened as we felt that this feature contributed to some unwanted yaw in manouevers. We also decided to employ Igor Burger's active timer with a Jeti Spin 66 ESC. For batteries we will use either the Thunder Power 5S or 6S 2700 mAh 25C. My choice of prop is the Resinger/Cox 12 X 5.5 RH flat back CF prop.
First flight was today and after 3 short (1.5 min.) flights to check lap time and adjust flaps, I went to a full 5.5 min. flight and did the whole pattern. The model is just what I wanted and was hoping to gain over last years model.

That looks just like an airplane! A Canadian airplane, but an airplane none the less.

Well done Alan, hope it serves you well.
Is the canopy removable for battery / motor access?
I recall the last one had that feature.

Very nice Alan, however you shouldn't have put it outside in the fall with wet paint. You got fallen leaves all over it!

Looks nice, Alan, as expected!
Any chance you and Chris...and maybe Joan and Keith...can come down to our May 2 Judging Clinic? It looks like Bruce Hunt is going to be our Chief Instructor. Howard is interested. I haven't heard back from PW, but it'd be good to see him...and Mark...come over from the eastside.

Alan,
Awesome as usual! Looks the Canadian duo will again excel.
Please tell Chris that I said hello.
I am finally working on a new airplane with last year's health problems behind. It will be slightly smaller. Bob and I are working on a new wing that will have less forward sweep in the hinge line and considerably less flap. The airplane will be called "Ragtime" and will be electric. Hopefully it will be ready before 2016.

Guys,
Thanks for all the nice comments. Chris and I will do test flights for his new one next week. His is all take apart and is outstanding as usual. Mine ended up weighing 62.5 oz. ready to fly with the 5S battery and 64.5 oz. with the 6S. Chris' new one will be about the same weight.
Jim. Sorry I won't make it down to Tucson. Really had it in the plans but had some things come up. I hope to see you down in Madera in October.
Tom. Both of us plan on being in Portland next month and Shawn, hope you make it up to Roseburg for the Northwest Regionals.
Tom N. Good to hear from you and glad your health is returning. Will tell Chris this afternoon when I go over and make him get the last bit of buffing done on the new ship.
Steve. We can probably make it down for the clinic. Will talk about it over this weekend.
Mr. Walker. You have a lot of room to talk. Anyone who lets their pet beaver near the paint and then walk all over the wing and tail shouldn't be making negative comments. I thought we'd given you ample warning about keeping those overgrown rodents for pets. I'll admit they are awfully cute when they are young. Mr. Granderson told me not to set the new plane down anywhere near any professional lawn care people.
I can see already that it's going to be another one of those years. Last year it was polar bear and beaver jokes. I thought switching from fauna to flora might mitigate the problem. Oh well another lesson learned.
