Nope! Hand launching is against the rules. Must ROG.  n1

The rather thick mono line is fine, though.

Thanks for the post and the reminder to find these shots.  I subbed at schools nearly everyday in January and February seems no different.  This does make my trip to the VSC more viable.

This gentleman visits the park frequently. He's from the local bird sanctuary. When you enter the outer road that leads to Buder Park, turn left instead and that will take you there. They bring a couple of Bald Eagles that they don't think will be able to return to the wild and excerise them. Usually draws a big crowd. I got some pics on one of my computers at home and I'll send them to you as soon as I can and you can put them up in the thread. Two handlers stand about 50 yards apart in the grass strip across from the circles and sort of "play catch" with one, flying from one handler to the other. pretty cool and makes for some neat pictures. One of their birds is often "flown" down at the ball park for Cardinals season home opening game.

You guys are sayin' that Bald Eagles are rare back there? There's a family of them on every little residential lake around here in the 'burbs of Seattle. Of course, bigger lakes have many more. In Alaska, they're about as common as chickens in Arkansas... y1 Steve

That is truly great.

Here in Tucson we often share our field with some ladies from the Raptor Rescue organization from the University.  We haven't been fortunate enough to see any Bald Eagles, but lots of Golden Eagles, Red Tailed Hawks and Coopers Hawks.

Bald Eagles have made a wonderful come back in the past 40 to 50 years.  They were in danger of becoming extinct about 50 years ago but are quite plentiful and have a strong population now.  A lot of this is through the efforts of sportsmens organization for financial support...Hunting liscense money at work.

Hi Guys,
I am the guy in the maroon shirt right behind Sparky. Just a few seconds before the photo was taken, that beak was about a half inch from my face and drooling. I think he was sizing me up. Not a good choice of shirt color for me that day. Probably looked like raw meat.
What we were all laughing about in the photo is that the Eagle had just taken a dump on Sparky. You had to be there. Awesome birds........

The first time I ever saw a Bald Eagle in flight was at Buder Park at one of the better Ice-O-Lated contests years ago. By better I mean weather wise. Shirt sleeve weather, low winds, clear blue sky. It came thermaling over the control line circles at a pretty good altitude, but when the sun light hit those white feathers, they just looked florescent even on a sunny day. Really awesome! They come down river from the north when things freeze hard and nest around the rivers and damns in the area. We saw another one just this past summer, and I think some have adapted and stay here year round now as long as the fishing is good. I gotta dig those other photos up.

They are almost that common in Arkansas as well...about one of the most moving experience I ever had was to stand beside an American Bald Eagle, the symbol of our country, and freedom! The eagle had been injured but was fully wild, and yet the Majestic creature seemed to understand that humans were not it's enemy. An interesting thing which lends to understanding the size of an adult Bald Eagle; their eyeball is about the same size as a human's. Great pics, thanks for posting them! H^^

This guy has aback yard full

I see them often as I am out in a rural area.
Just west of the Huntersville field is a area with a lot of eagles in it because of the rivers and lakes. My wife looks at this one every day, it is in Huntersville.

Thanks for the pic and another reason I need to get back to St Louis.   Where I do crossing duty we have a big hawk that loafs around the sky either early in the AM or late aftenoon.   He has lots of squirrels to feast on and a couple of rabbits.  He makes the crows look little.

After seeing Allen's picture I recalled the very first time I ever saw a bald eagle.  I grew up just South of St. Louis right along the Mississippi but didn't see one until I was well into my 30's.  After moving to Vancouver BC in 1981 I realized that Bald Eagles are as common as sea gulls up here.  I went to the flying field this morning and after stopping for a coffee I thought I'd make a count of the eagles I saw on the way down.  The drive along the highway is only about 6 miles and I counted 32 in the trees adjacent to the highway.  On the way home I thought I'd make another count and was up to 11 after about a mile an half.  When I got close to the Vancouver land fill I noticed one tree close by that had approximately 40 eagles in it.  I decided to give up counting.

We took a 50th wedding anniversary cruise to Alaska in 2007.  At that time Bald Eagles were still on the endangered list.  First stop in Alaska, I went on the veranda to look around.  There was a bald eagle eating a fish on top of a nearby parking garage. Seeing that, I figured they were ready for delisting.  They were delisted soon after.

One day on the East Side, across from St Louis, I looked up and saw this eagle very high, highest I have ever seen one.  There was a little black dot harassing him.  I figured out it was a crow.  I have never seen another one that high.

On a canoe trip into Quetico Provincial park we spent several days base camped in North Bay of Basswood lake.  We saw all kinds of wild life, but no eagles.  Then when we left our final camp in Canada, two bald eagles flew out of a tree ahead of us and it seemed as though they were leading us back to the border and the ranger's cabin.  It was a beautiful site to close out or great trip!  They went all the way to the cabin!
