As most know I am a fan of Tom Wardens work. At the last Brodak's contest I was given 4 engines. a G21.46 a VF.46 and 2 VF 25 engines. I also acquired a V.60 with a Big Art muffler. I will be putting the G 21 back into Tom's Chipmunk and I have decided to build a Millennium Minado.

It will not be a I beam as the original but will have the same wing as my Continental. Tom built two of those a green one and a purple one. Mine will be red in the same paint scheme. I started after I got back with wood I bought at Brodak's. I have the fuse about done.

Do you have experience running ST60's? Like VF's, if you don't know the "formula", you'll walk away disappointed.

Only 20 years worth. I ran St 60tys and VF's until the PA's came out. I also ended up with 13x6 and 13x5 Revup props I will be making come carbon copies of those.

Here is a quick shot of the 1st weeks progress. Well almost a week. Not much. It will have a full cockpit detail and pilot. I am going to clean up the beanch and start shooting a video today. Today comes how I lay out stab and elevators in full detail.

You have to build a bigger model or get a smaller pilot.

You've heard, "Look, no hands!"

Well, your pilot, "Look, no arms!"

I would rethink that pilot.

Otherwise, the workmanship is world class as usual.

The pilot will be fine thanks. I would also add right behind the fuse a a shot of my average kit. In the next 2 weeks I will cut sand and shape out of that pile of wood anything that does not look like a stunt plane and after that it will be painted base coat Miss Ashley red. With different shades of pearl and candy reds as trim. Gold leaf letting. Shot with clear and buffed. I can see it already can you ?

Sparky, I can see it! Should look gorgeous! The little bit of gold leaf I have done allows me to appreciate the lettering job you will be doing! For an extra touch, you can make it spun gold leaf.

I watch the videos just to see if I can learn something new. Now about the pilot. I take it Avaiojet has not seen too many of the pylon racer in the smaller classes. Also some of the aerobatic planes. Looks great to me.

I did a lot of flying with Tom Warden during his "Minado" days and his work was simply beautiful. I saw all three Minados ,one blue,one purple and the other was green. I flew the blue Minado and it was a very good model. All three planes had a long nose so a heavy engine would not be advisable. I also flew Tom's Continental and took the pictures for the article. The Minado used an I Beam wing and the Continental did not. I have not compared plans of the two planes but, I think the Continental's wing was not the same as the Minado and would make the Minado not legal for Classic. But as I said I have not compared the two. From the pix you are doing very nice work----and good luck.

Sounds really nice, House of Kolor products?

Will you draw something out or will you just "wing it?"

Gold leaf. Not in all cases meant to be cleared, that's why some applications really glow.

Unfortunately, a bit of the luster is removed once cleared. A necessary step for model airplane finishes.

Still looks nice though.

Looking forward to seeing this one!

As soon as finished uploading I willpost the first of this build. This plane will be just about the same size as mu Continental XL only with wing mounted gear. It will not be a I beam as the original was. It will be shades of red in a similar paint scheme. The linage of this plane does not follow the original Minado only in a similar name.

TY, you may have miss-read what I stated. The Minado is definitely Classic legal. Tom built the blue one first and flew it a bunch before he made the green and purple ones. What I said was-----if the Continental wing is used in the Minado it may not be classic legal. If two classic designs are combined I am pretty sure that would not be legal. It would surely open a very large can of worms.

I've seen the purple version when Tom Lay flew it at VSC one year quite a while ago now. Tom said when people asked him how it flew, he would tell them " It flies like a chopped and lowered '49 Mercury!" or something like that. He said he couldn't fly it like Tom Warden could. Beautiful airplane, and when this thread started I was wondering what had happened to it after Tom Lay passed. It's in good hands at RJ's place!

I don't think Bob is building a classic legal plane. He is planning on using a ST60 and I think the original is a .35 size plane. Correct me if I am wrong Bob but aren't you enlarging it like you did the Continental?

I am not building a classic legal airplane. This is only a tribute plane just as my Continental XL is.

Bob, I just watched your latest video on the Minado build and I have a question.

You used shims under the lower spar when dry fitting the ribs and I was wondering why. I thought the lost foam fixture was the only thing you needed to use to make up the wing. Please enlighten me.

The trailing edge sheet is 1/16 so you must shim the spar 1/16 so the wing is level in the cradle.

Doesn't Bobby stress the shimming of the spar of the wing on the lost foam set up? You are doing great with the video.
