Middlesex Modelers Vintage Combat Festival
« on: September 19, 2022, 05:46:28 AM »
As stated this is not a contest but a fun filled day of celebrating the combat craft technology from days of yore. Other than just flying them we have a couple of loosley regulated 'events'.  The weather was perfect and we stayed busy flying as many types as possible.
The first category is the 'How Fast is that thing mister'. We got the watch on all planes that were able to complete 7 laps.  All planes, with some exceptions, were powered by the Fox .36x in all variations. Many had the Gardner P/Cl. Thanks Brian!
Al Ferarro  Super Satan  14.23
Roy Glen   Super Satan   15.2
Tom Luciano   SS            16.0
Al   Super Swoop             16.51
Jim Vigani   Arrow            16.75  (own design 1961)
Jim V    Lancer                 17.7
Tom Schaefer  Half Fast     18.02   1958  'Blackhead'
Tom L   Blitz                     18.59
Tom S    WOW                  18.9       early Fox .40  'Rocket'
Jim V    Able                     20.9       Own design
Jim V                               21.1       Own design

And then  there were those who attempted to fly the stunt pattern with these ships. Very entertaining!   Tom Luciano came out on top this year.
Tom L.  Super Satan      126.01
Jim V    Arrow               128.15
Jim V   Up n Atom          134.0
Tom S.  HalfFast            138.9
Jim V    Able                 142.7
Phil Cartier  took a shot at it with a modern speed limit ship and laid down a time of 138.2
There were many ships that we just did not get a chance to fly.   Maybe next year.............    TS

Half Fast with a Fox Blackhead doing 100 mph: nothing but smiles!  Maybe fastest ever for that airplane and/or that engine?

Well done and congratulations to the winners, looks like it was another fun combat festival !
Lipo Hurl well that sounds a good alternative to biffing engines, what size lipo?
Does sound like a great extra novelty event to add onto the Vintage/Longest day Combat event here in NZ (held around our longest day on 17th of December). Hopefully we will get a good turnout and a few times recorded too.

Regards Gerald

Lipo was a 4000 mAh, 4 cell, 16 oz.  Fully discharged per OSHA regulations.  All wires need to be attached for aerodynamic standard fairness.

Details on Blackhead.  Taipan 9x6 with Powermaster 10/22.  Screaming and seems to love it!

That’s awesome. I was expecting a nitro number well north of 40!

Tom, I think for forgot to compensate for puffing of the LiPo battery in the cross wind which made it veer left and lost some distance in your final throw. Your flight trajectory was excellent and it should’ve been the winner! I got a charge ⚡️competing in the LiPo Hurl can’t wait for next year. 💥
