Looking at the sale on Maxford ARF's today and noticed they list C/L as a catagory. Check out this link, and look at the bellcrank... what is wrong with this picture? The bellcrank pivots on a glow plug?? Am I nuts?

Open up the instruction manual and it shows a clear picture of the bell crank .  No bushing on the lead outs attached to this (and I use this term loosely) bell crank.

    Charlie Bauer was a prominant fixture in the CL Scale circuit for as long as I can remember.  I say "was" only because last year was supposed to be his last Nat's apperance.  He is getting up there in age and I suppose's he's throttling back.  Probably the same reason he relinquished his VP seat.  I was always annoyed that he NEVER covered anything but RC fun-fly's and expos in any of his columns.  He used to be a regular at the Broken Arrow contest in St Louis but coverege of it was never worthy of his editorial in MA.

As for the model...**sigh** whatever....

Looks like a 2" bellcrank, with about 5/8" to 3/4" crank arm. Anybody use a 1" line spacing on the handle? By the way, the flying site reminds me a lot of the video introduction of the TF Score for some reason.  Steve

I don't know those names but the field is Whittier Narrows where many a Chinese ARF is videoed, usually a foam R/C Scale ARF!

So, maybe we could have a "Maxford Event" where each of the contestants visits Lowes and buys all they need to construct an airplane?  (It'd be like the Orange Crate event we have at Brodak's each year.  But not as good since Lowes doesn't carry orange crates.)

Read the title on the video.   Then go look in their ad under ARF CL.  They show both planes.    All I can say is if it gets people flying control line and will last more then a hundred flights,  great.

At least some of you know whom Charlie Bauer is. I was hoping it would spur some conversation about the models he designed by people that know him and his models, vs. what we are seeing out of Maxford.  Apparently he was involved with the 'redesign', and provided 'advice' ... and then signed off on it as ok.

 Anyone who can't apply U.S. insignias right side up should be deported. Whenever I see that on a model it just screams stupidity.

 Oh, and the Maxford plane, TOTAL CRAP. Distributors of such garbage should be ashamed, and also be deported.

That model looked twitchy and also looked like it was stalled on some of the loops. The sad thing is that they'll get the idea that nobody likes their CL products and give up. A good design, properly executed, with a 4" bellcrank, slow controls, and the correct control ratios and CG location emphatically mentioned in the instructions could yield a much better result. NOT saying the design is faulty. The bellcrank is a major problem. I've met Chuck Rudner (he looked at my buggered ankle/foot one year at the Bladder Grabber). I'd bet that he hated flying that thing, whether it was a P-51 or P-47.    Steve

After looking at the website I thought the plane looked somewhat similar to the Tower Fun 51.

It is very similar to the Fun 51. BTW, I used to sell Maxford RC ARF's, and their quality was top notch. Can't vouch for this one though

By the way, the Fun 51 is definitely not what you want for CL.  However, you can make them work.  I did.

By changing every single dimension in the design!!!

The guys in my club thought I was nuts: "how come you're wasting time on that?  In the time you wasted on that, you could have scratch-built an Impact!'

I suppose they were right about that.  But I have to disagree with them that I could have built an Impact that quickly.

My CL buddy is Don Repp, and since that video was at Whittier, I will be that he helped get it running/flying.

Don Repp confirmed that he was there when the video was shot and that the plane is not the best quality.
Also that Chuck Rudner was there as well.

An option to get started, one that THIS newbie is going to pass on. My Banshee is all but ready to maiden with the OS .40 that Don tuned for me.
Hopefully next Friday, If I don't have to work. I'm not sure if Mr "Rudder" will be there or not. :-)
