Limited space - what’s your setup?
« on: October 16, 2021, 09:29:25 AM »
What was I thinking!?!?
We have downsized our living space and I went from a two car garage down to a one car garage. Of course I had to purge some “stuff” but I will need to store 5 planes and maybe a few future planes. These are 40-50 size planes.
Can I see a few photos of how you store planes with limited space.
Thanks
Paul

I used 1/2" EMT conduit attached to the vertical 2x4's with 1 hole straps. i cut the pool noodles and slid them over the EMT. I have 40 planes and it solved the problem for me....Gene

Paul,
I will see about posting a pic but basically I have been hanging mine from the leadouts either from coffee cup hooks screwed into the wood supports for the main floor in my basement or using some hanger wire hooks along a clothes rod and have hung some by the prop between parallel rails by turning the prop to allow access and then rotating 90 degrees to hang them.  Pretty efficient way of storing them close in tight quarters.

Hanging by the leadouts is the easiest on the plane.  While I do use a horizontal rack for transport and temporary garage storage, long term is via leadouts.

For a garage, one option is to hang them over the car hood, if applicable and available.  That "hang 'em high" approach can be a space saver, if a little tougher to use, typically requiring a ladder.  My basement closet cup hooks are set at a level that has the wingtips just a couple of inches off the ground, which is a safe, easy height for hanging.

I hang by the leadouts.  If you use uneven leadout lengths, make yourself an intermediate hook so that the plane hangs with the surfaces straight.  For me, that intermediate hook doubles as a jig to make up line sets for my hard point handles.

For the planes that actually have finishes that I care about, I put socks on the wings.  These are made out of some bubble wrap with heat activated adhesive that I got -- uh -- somewhere.

If it were me, and the garage had exposed rafters, I'd be tempted to hang the planes up in the rafters so I could walk under them.  That may be more trouble than it's worth, though.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Thanks for the visual John! I think this is the route I have to go.

Paul,
Yes that is Frank's LA Heat.  It is currently waiting for an electric conversion.  You will also see Frank's Minute Man in the middle which is a modified Vector 40 and to the far right is a modifed Ares that Frank built wanting to recreate his Stunt-Fu from days gone by, but he ran out of steam.  Lots of memories of flying with Frank.  Since this picture, I have repurposed that area for e-power only.  Do not need to drip oil on the carpet.  Will get a stern talking to  by the little woman.  Spent electrons do not seem to leave marks.
