Kestrel 46
« on: December 12, 2020, 05:02:23 PM »
Hi,
can anyone tell me about the Kestrel 46 or have any photo's?

I have an OS25VF on pipe I am looking to match a ship to and am wondering if this might be a good fit?

Many thanks in advance.

My New Kestrel. Needs a clear coat yet. Was originally going to us a ST46. Decided to use a PA 40 ultra light on a pipe. I don’t know how powerful you 25 is.

Look through the Flying Models plans site for a model by Mike Starrett, I think his name was. It was designed around the .25VF on a pipe. I think he got the set up from randy Smith and maybe Randy will remember more about that. The model was presented in Flying Models, I just can't be sure of s year, but I think early 90's would be close. I think he co-wrote the article with some body else. Mike was a member of the club in the southern Indiana/Illinois border, near Sellersburg Indiana. The Skyliners club I think it is. That may be enough info to jog some one else's memory for more info. You can at least check the wing span and area specs against each other and the overall shape and moments. I have been messing around in my basement and took a quick look through some mags but didn't come up with anything.
   Type at you later,

Check this link out. I got lucky on the first try with the FM plans site. It was in May, 1996 Flying Models

Doug, really really nice!!
Is it 56" wingspan?
I probably need to keep it under 47oz, RTF. Any idea how much yours weighs so far?

Dan,
You always come through for me.! The reason I particularly mention the Kestrel 46 is a guy here in OZ has a set of Bob Hunts foam  cores, NIB, for sale!
The Eliminator is a beautiful looking plane, just my style, so I may have to get a set of plans off Bob.

Thanks for the information guys.

There was also a 60 size called the Super Kestrel. I hope mine will be under 60oz.

Hi Craig
I ran a VF 25 in vector 40 for some time with great results. It was around 45oz and but in strong winds the 25 was working to the max power in that size plane . So I think the kestrel would be to much for the vf25
Cheers steve

Thanks Steve,
A guy, here in Australia, won the 2005 nats with a Vector 40 running a 25VF on pipe. Like yours his was 45oz!

I have a Vector 40 ARF but it is 47oz, RTF, LA40, without whatever modifications I would have to make for the pipe tunnel. So not an option really.

As I said I have the engine and can get the cores but I don't really want another 46+ size plane at the moment.

Ah well more to think on. Thanks for the reply.

KESTREL by Steve Buso - 56 in. for 40-46 size engines, available in either foam or build up plan

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Might have to leave the tips off ! .Id think maybe 54 in & 50 Oz would be it, as big as youd go . Though 47 Oz & 50 in. for a FSR 25 is good, if a bit of work when its blowing .
A set of cores & the std 25 % tail with std moments & youd be underway, style to suit. Use what fits .

Steve was the guy who won the Advanced event at the 2005 Aus Nats, I can scan the Eliminator article
if you need it. As Steve said, you need to keep the weight down, Kestrel way too big for the VF25.

Hey Paul, yes I took that straight off the message you sent me.

I looked up the Eliminator and found a couple of threads on it and a picture and I like it a lot.

I will get the plans off Steve.

Perhaps. All I was going by was the listing on the results page.
