Leather Fillets - What Size & How?
« on: September 25, 2015, 11:56:35 PM »
I’ve never used leather fillets and the time has come to try them.  What size do you use for what application, and how do you apply them?  (And my apologies if this should be in the building forum ...)

Thanks!

Dennis

Well, I just found some great stuff in the "Building Techniques" forum by Floyd Carter, Ty Marcucci and Walter Umland - Thanks guys!

Now, how about choosing the size?

I use 3/8" for the wing root fillets and 1/4" for the stabilizer fillets.  I install them with Sigment cement and smear a layer of the glue on top of the fillet after it is glued in place.  I do not have to do anything to get the edges to blend as the cement and dope will fair them in so they are invisible.

I have been using leather fillets since I was a 12 year old building a Veco Squaw and they are the easiest fillets to install there is.  Takes about an hour to do the wing root fillets and a little less to do the horizontal stabilizer fillets.

When you mention 3/8" or 1/4", are you measuring across the "face" of the material, or you may call it the long side of the triangle? I got some leather fillets from Bill Sawyers widow a few years ago, but can't find her contact info. Maybe a search here or on SSW will turn it up. I believe it is still available for the original use it was intended for in the tool/die/casting industry.

It's Freeman Supply, Randy.

Their product description list them as being sized by radius. 100 ft. is the minimum order per size but you have to get a quote from them.

I hope one of you will invest a few hundred $ for a good supply.  I know they will sell, based on the interest shown.

(I was in the "cottage industry" business for 25 years, and I don't want to get into it again).

Anyone ever purchase leather fillets from Fillet Express?

Looks like they sell in small quantities and the prices are clearly listed per foot with a quantity discount.
Not sure how they compare with Freeman Leather in price or quality.
