As many of you know, besides the serious (?) competition at the Brodak Fly-In, we have many "side events", purely for fun - Junkyard Wars is probably the best known.

BUT, we also fly C/L at night - not dusk or some condition where you can kind of see the plane but NIGHT!!! Pitch black, can't see anything. Full IFR.

I set up my ARF Cardinal with a system of 7 flashing LED strobes and 4 turbine powered LEDs. Absolutely stunning and more than a bit challenging to fly - I just set it out and offer it to anyone who wants a ride.

Quite a number of people had flown it, the last being Phil Spillman. I was wiping down the plane and I noticed what I thought was a dried leaf on the tail. I was just about to flick it off when I saw that it was a BAT!!! That's right, a bat's wings were wrapped around the stabilizer, one under, one over, body underneath.

The bat is no longer with us but consider the likelihood of something like that happening - bats are equipped with some sort of sonic equipment that not only allows them to avoid obstacles but also to home in on prey. Did the sound of the engine (very quiet 4-stroke) confuse him/her?

In any case, Mike Danford (sp?) peeled the little creature off and it was given proper burial.
