As many of you know, besides the serious (?) competition at the Brodak Fly-In, we have many "side events", purely for fun - Junkyard Wars is probably the best known. y1 y1 y1
BUT, we also fly C/L at night - not dusk or some condition where you can kind of see the plane but NIGHT!!! Pitch black, can't see anything. Full IFR. %^@
I set up my ARF Cardinal with a system of 7 flashing LED strobes and 4 turbine powered LEDs. Absolutely stunning and more than a bit challenging to fly - I just set it out and offer it to anyone who wants a ride. #^ #^
Quite a number of people had flown it, the last being Phil Spillman. I was wiping down the plane and I noticed what I thought was a dried leaf on the tail. I was just about to flick it off when I saw that it was a BAT!!! That's right, a bat's wings were wrapped around the stabilizer, one under, one over, body underneath. ~^ ~^ ~^
The bat is no longer with us but consider the likelihood of something like that happening - bats are equipped with some sort of sonic equipment that not only allows them to avoid obstacles but also to home in on prey. Did the sound of the engine (very quiet 4-stroke) confuse him/her? ??? ??? ???
In any case, Mike Danford (sp?) peeled the little creature off and it was given proper burial. n~

ps - the pictures were taken by super enthusiastic pilot/photographer Chris Burgess.

G >:Dive it to Ozzy. >:D

I missed the Cardinal night flights but you could still see the glow from the blue lights at times during the day.

The "SIDE SHOW" is an attraction that sets the Brodak Fly-In apart from any other modeling event.
Besides the blinking plane, We saw a B-17 and a Mustang fly escort, a pulse jet, that giant Flight Streak. Ringmasters that hovered.

Right on , dude!!!

Heck with the turbos, the lights were Bat-tery powered LL~
(come on, you knew that was coming)

"Riddle me this, Batman!"
Thats a pretty funny picture. Mr Bat sure got a suprise!

That'll teach the little batsturd! SH^

At the SIG Contest on Sat evening we were flying Bi-Slobs. Someone over a couple of circles from us was flying a stunt plane that had lights outlining the fuse. They were doing a fair job of the pattern also. Early days used to be combat with glo sticks taped to the airplanes. I can still remember when we had three up carrier flying with the deck. Have fun, DOC Holliday

So a bat shaped kill marking under the canopy frame, four more and your an ace. LL~

Here is the lighting setup for the Cardinal. The two red circlular lights and the foward mounted arrays are battery powered, the turbines start working at about 15 MPH.
Even though this added quite a bit of weight, I still flew it in profile - what the heck!!!

Guess that proves its a real "lights out" performer!
