Kit bashing P-39
« on: November 29, 2009, 06:57:29 PM »
I inherited a Brodak P-40 kit from Phil Spillman for free a few months ago. I had Kit bashed a Brodak Zero into a P-39 several years ago and flew it for years after it finally meet its end. I always wanted to build another one . This is my chance I decided to do the same modifications I did for the original kit bash add a 1/8 inch between the wing ribs. didn’t need to do that. I had to buy all new planking that was expensive. The P-40 is big enough as is. Now I have 610 sq. in. wing and had to make the stab larger. I slid the top half of the fuselage forward enough to draw the forward canopy of the 39. I then dropped the engine a half inch because I had raised my wing half inch in my sock p-40. I chose a XP-39 because that is the only silver one I could find it had side intakes for the supercharger. then later there were YP-39 with guns the army used for testing. This is the one I used, note my cannon in the spinner I’ll add the air scoop later

It’s Dupli-color silver. You don’t spray it directly on or it will stripe up. Hold the can back and let the pant fall it will be even then when you spray the fuel proof clear over it this will bring it to life. Once you use Dupli-Color you won’t use any thing else, the spray nozzle's don’t clog and it covers in some cases one coat but it isn’t fuel proof

Top Flite Lustrekote crystal clear works fine. John Tate used that on his Kit bashed P-47 Razorback from a P-40 kit. I used a two part clear that makes the colors really shine it’s called Original clear kote Extreme. Part no. for the clear is # 5185 and # 5186 for the hardener.

Hi Willis.  Thanks for the3 tip on the Duplicolor paint.  I actually looked at that paint at Walmart just the other day but wasn't sure if it was fuel proof or not! LOL  Where does one get the Lustercoat?
