That is sad to see a beautiful plane go in.  That wind is murder at times.  But I too have flown in Wichita winds in which I wondered if .018 lines were enough. D>K

When I was consulting with Agusta Helicopter in Cascina Di Costa, Italy, we were right near the original Caproni factory.
Many of the buildings are still standing but not in very good condition!

Count Caproni liked his aircraft BIG.

I've seen a 60 size Stunter break both .018 cables on second normal loop and fly away for 100m before crashing to the ground in a very very strong wind. It was at the Brazilian Championship in Rio de Janeiro.

We told him not to fly because no points were needed anymore because it was the 3⁰ flight.

Can be great fun , flying in ' the wind ' , but Im not sure using your best aerplane is the best idea .

FIRST ' video ' ive seen , of blustery conditions with pilot earning his keep . Anyone got any more ?

Flying in such limit wind conditions is almost suicidal...it's NOT fun and the price you pay is too high... n1

One thing that we do best in practicing is avoiding wind.  That crash was avoidable but unless you have put yourself in that position many times in practice you would have no idea what to do.  I would venture to say that in the future his plane will survive.

Flying in a drained peat marsh , in the wet season , the decelerations way less . They go in 6 inches or so .
Fast Footwork helps no end , but remain ing in the ' center ' is not so easy !

This thing got planted a dozen or two times , MANY ' hits ' including a tree or two.
Started with a 21/35 ST , tried OS 35 , ST 35C , ST 21/40 , ST 21/46 - and the nose fell off .
Magnum FSR 25 OS clone , with  a 7.5 mm intake & a leaky spraybar ( useless run sealed ) .
Was Best ! His O ' Head eights very reminiscent of this . When the flexy 10 x 6 lost a 1/4 inch
on a touch'n'go on the concrette resivoir , the suction from the wind ! , it imediately went better ,
Eventually wore the front of the tips round , in the grass .

Fighting and struggling its way round , up the top . Like the sheets against the wind , in a yacht  .

Of Course , it's all rather Manly ! ( LL~  LL~  S?P ) They cant get the tractor mower on there for a few months in winter , it'll bog .

Big Suction under a treee or two . Winds predominantly from bottom left corner across & up , about 30 degree . After falling over the ridge , back of there .
Flew over to the right , mainly . Mostly off the screen . LEARNT to GET THE LINES TIGHT , many near misses , so not entirely misses .
Run , Get Em Tight . usually full up or down so the ' yank ' which removes a lot of the inertia / momentum - ROTATES it - amost ish . The 5 ft. turn . !  ;D
IF it goes in SQUARE the stress distribution is more even so the wings are less liable to fall off , and the fuse snap . Like if you just stand there
admiring the view, which can lead to the ' blow down ' on outsides getting a STRIKE on the Concrette Picket which , CRICKET PITCH . inverted . Opps .
Has the nice slippery nylon grass topping , but catching the fin on the edge dosnt help . Theres probably still a few dents in the field from it .

Its about a acre of concrete up on top of the world here , so might be termed exposed . Discretion may be the better part of valour here .
the Gieske Nobler went in vertical after a stall , around 1976 . A Combat Wing with a ETA 29 doing a Kamakazi flat out , from 200 ft . Dead Center -
fortunately stopped , as the fuel pickup was upward . And shidded in umarked at out feet . These were learing about hitting your wake eppisodes .

Whole District is enveloped in suburban neurosis & televisioniteus in the promising new age . Not to mention the traffic .  :(

So . Dont try this at Home .  ;) Dont Use your ' best ship ' . used 55 + .018 , match for Bob Gieske's  58 ' to center ! . Live & learn . Dont believe everything you see or anything you hear .
Bigger things benifitted from the practise , so were less likely to strike . The 57 in. Folkerts with a 21/40 with a 9 mm intake & C'Case pressure was pretty good , but needed two tanks of fuel to get the scedule through  ;D   LL~   ??? which may contravene curerent regulations . The YANGA sound on the 11 x 4 was pretty good . The RPR HP 40 worked good . Way Good . If the Lines are TIGHT it'll TURN , is the theory ! #^*!

Nothing but Fun . Like a Dodge 440 with a stuck throttle on a wet skid pan doing a precision slalom course . Relaxing might not be appropriate , chilling out isnt being soaked to the skin & frozen wet , either .

When the big 150% peacemaker / flite streak , went in vertical , every rib was in three pieces , split vertical or horizontal . Took a entire tin of pins to reglue it , a few hours work - set on planks . 2 R - 2 L .
tho admitadly wasnt at its best afterward . the Phantom seemed to survive ? it's missadventures well . one was only a line break in calm air a fortnite after the picket whitch eppisode , of its 3 wing broke
in middle episodes . I think it was 12 canopies . 2 dozen ' the earth got in the way . Plus a tree . Imediate ( within Two Days ) re glueification is a necesity .
Hosing out the sand inside after the cricket pitch , the water went through under the wing , aft . Two Days in high heat in the car eventually got it back to its 47 / 50 ounces .
A good few hours scrubbing with petrol got it de gook & lawn clippinged - Which got it near ( Er ) its original form . Ten Gallons of ten minute flights . pretty well past a ' Precision Aerobatic ' machine eventually .
But considered it'd earned its keep . Like Parting with a old friend when it was given the chop . Mostly to worn to salvage . Shoulda past it on to continue its missadventures . A bigger donk woulda got it
back on form . Almost .
 :-X perhaps I suppose It'd got a bit mushey .  %^@

Of course , its like a hard workout , cycle ride & other things other people do , like a  boxing match ? Moto X , best when its over . But ' the kick ' from having accomplished its the thrill . In Hindsite . Your a bit busy at the time to notice much .
His gave a few big kicks up there , but looked like it just blew in - no tension . The Big Nose Greenaway trip or the rudder going OUT on DOWN , stops a Power induced Yaw , which can start things like your hair standing on end .
Evident a bit  power up top couldve been a bit of use . All very well ' training ' when yoou can run about the field . But if your tied to the center , the planes GOT to work . But still - youll have found what can & cant be done .

If a motors full boogey pulling it out of a ' hole ' or through one , You get a bit of tourque roll , So need at times to finesse the controls ,     tikly up high . or have countermeasures .
