I spent the afternoon getting ready for winter.
« on: November 04, 2006, 02:56:56 PM »
I have removed the PA.75 from my T-Bolt and re-fitted it into the Jet. I will be flying the Jet all winter. This serves double duty. First because of the cold damp weather it will probably pick up weight. I can save T-Bolt #2 as a back up for next year. Also it will be the test on the New RS. Pipe. It should keep me sharp through the winter months. I will fly this at the Ice-O-Lated contest.

It has been hanging on the wall so long I forgot how Kool it was.  SH^

What kind of temperatures do you usually have?  I run in the 30's for much of the winter (high).  Sometimes starting is very interesting, but I am new at this.   The last time I flew much, it was nearly 50 years ago in a much warmer climate.  Any suggestions for cold weather engines?

High Nitro fuel like say 25% for a prime will get 'rm started. Ronsonal all lighter fluid for a prime will do it too. An electric starter really helps.

Staying inside and building is the best advice. Last year I had a cold from January till June.

In Chicago "all the usual suspects" from the local club, Chicagoland Circle Cutters, try to get out at least once every month through the winter. A really hot glow plug battery and a wet prime seem to do the trick in getting engines started. The real challenge is keeping your hands from freezing in the prop blast. I personally cannot fly while wearing gloves so the fingers get pretty numb by the end of a flight. Hot coffee doesn't help the engine starting but works wonders for the pilots and pit crew  n~.

That is the spirit Dennis.  I try to shame the local people into coming out as well at least once a month and have had pretty decent success.  Our problem is finding a plowed road to a flying space.  Do they plow out at "Ol' Neddy" during the white periods?  We can usually access the front of Broome near the parking lot for our escapades.  I have found that a ski helps, but is not required and that Naptha is your friend in the winter months.  Should see the RC boys when I finger flip one to life at a snow fly.

John,
Yep. The County Forest Preserve District plows the streets at "ole Neddy". The snow mobilers, hikers, and cross country skiers all use the facility during the winter. Thankfully the county always sets up snow fences to keep the snow mobiles off the RC and control line flying areas.
Keep up the good work in shaming Frank and Jay into flying during Michigan's "non-summer"  n~. If Frank keeps practicing he'll be able to beat me at SIG again next year >:D.
