I need some encouragement to visit K.O.I.
« on: January 04, 2014, 07:05:50 AM »
Hi guys.

Just finished shoveling 15"  snow here in the northeast.  Cabin fever is setting in big time.

Should I hop in the van and drive two days to Florida?

If you knew what I gave up to move to FL, you would say I was crazy. Absolutely crazy.

I didn't do it just for the weather, and believe me, I have absolutely no regrets. Neither does my wife Paula.

The last time I was in Florida to visit daughter, I was accused of bringing the cold weather with me.  I even had a jacket on.  This was at Stuart FL.

I was there 2 years ago and froze my butt off. Northern Florida was not warm but chilly and windy. If you going to have a KOI in Florida get South far enough to guarantee warm weather then it would truly be a winter break.

Well worth the trip, the weather can be  a little chilly for locals sometimes, most of the time it is very nice stunt weather, the thought of being in Florida  makes it seem warmer,

it was 17 degrees here last night, so I am ready to go  right now,

The contest should be on everyone's bucket list, well run  contest, great host club, unlimited flying circles for practice,  in Florida in January for the first contest of the year

, what else could you want

Master field...I could ride my bike there. Chased my Goldberg Viking clear past Amelia Earhart Field, out toward where the Palmetto Express way is. Scored a "max" on its very first flight. Miami Dade Community College is there now. You can still see parts of the old field on this site.

Rub it in Peabody.  Yes it was 11F degrees here when I got out to shovel some snow and clear the van off.   Only about three inches average.  So I will get even and come visit you too. LL~ LL~

Looking forward to seeing everyone.

The speed of the cold fronts have changed appears as if the KOI will not be as pleasant as last year.  Looks like it will be a breezy Sunday.  ''  '' ''  ''

I will build it. It's gonna be really difficult to find me with an ARF. I know every bit of my airplane!

Guys,
Even though this is Florida, it looks like it will be a bit cool (40's) in the mornings. A couple tips:

Charge you glow driver and starter battery for IC.
Keep the batteries inside over night and out of the breeze.
Keep your fuel inside also.
Dress in layers. Have a windbreaker for the outer layer.

See you there.

1) If you can't get a bump out of your engine due to cold weather, give it a shot of Ronson Lighter Fluid (aka Naptha).

2) If you can't get enough laps and don't have enough tank capacity for more, add no more than one oz. of Coleman lantern fuel per quart of glow fuel.

3) If your eStunter quits before the timer says it should, put in a bigger battery.

Thanks go out to Gerald Schamp for #1, and Dave Royer for #2. Expect miracles! Both tricks work a treat.  H^^ Steve

Like it or not this will be the weather for the KOI.  A change from what was predicted a week ago.  Best heed the above suggestions.  Dress warm, in layers; that breeze  gets real cold after a couple of hours. For you pasty Yankees: Sunscreen might be a good idea.

Both days were flyable.  Basic & beginner were able to put in their flights.  Flying stopped because of rain & the wind picked up after that. It did get exciting for the experts as they were finishing after the noon hour.  The wind made the finalists for the KOI cup demonstrate their true skill & nerves of steel.   Congratulations C. C  We were  impressed.  The wind did get best of a few planes.  It was my impression that everyone had a good time & were happy that they came. Looking forward to the KOI 2015.

Should I hop in the van and drive two days to Florida?

In Florida, if you don't learn to fly in the wind, you're not going to do much flying.
