Hi guys.
Just finished shoveling 15" snow here in the northeast. Cabin fever is setting in big time.
Should I hop in the van and drive two days to Florida?

Hi Linheart
It's a great contest and a nice break......
Mike Ostella likes the AutoTrain, which takes some of I-95 away!
Have fun!

YES! y1 If U can get out! LL~

If you knew what I gave up to move to FL, you would say I was crazy. Absolutely crazy.
I didn't do it just for the weather, and believe me, I have absolutely no regrets. Neither does my wife Paula.

absolutely! Get a bigger van and just stay here. No snow here.

The last time I was in Florida to visit daughter, I was accused of bringing the cold weather with me. I even had a jacket on. This was at Stuart FL.
-
I was there 2 years ago and froze my butt off. Northern Florida was not warm but chilly and windy. If you going to have a KOI in Florida get South far enough to guarantee warm weather then it would truly be a winter break.
-
Of course I have been at Tuscon and thankful I had my overcoat and gloves. LL~ LL~

In the beginning, the KOI was held in Miami, Florida. Seems like a lifetime ago.
-
Linheart Send in the voucher or you will not get past the gate. It was cold there last year.
The KOI was also held at Sebring many years ago
-
Well worth the trip, the weather can be a little chilly for locals sometimes, most of the time it is very nice stunt weather, the thought of being in Florida makes it seem warmer,
it was 17 degrees here last night, so I am ready to go right now,
The contest should be on everyone's bucket list, well run contest, great host club, unlimited flying circles for practice, in Florida in January for the first contest of the year
, what else could you want

Master field...I could ride my bike there. Chased my Goldberg Viking clear past Amelia Earhart Field, out toward where the Palmetto Express way is. Scored a "max" on its very first flight. Miami Dade Community College is there now. You can still see parts of the old field on this site.

Cold or not, I wish I could be at the KOI. Where I am currently at, there is a foot of snow on the ground......
-
When the KOI was in Starke, it was 29* in the morning. I had the first flight and my engine didn't want to start.

Steve,
It will not be he same without you . Looks like this guy thinks KOI weather will be nice and warm
-
The thermometer in the van said 87* on the way home from the field this afternoon....time for a swim....
Only going to be 53 here tomorrow.....brrrrrr....
-
Rub it in Peabody. Yes it was 11F degrees here when I got out to shovel some snow and clear the van off. Only about three inches average. So I will get even and come visit you too. LL~ LL~

Hopefully we are getting the cool weather is getting out of the way this week and KOI will be great. Remember to go to the contest tab and get the waiver and send it in. Will make your trip smoother once you get here. See you at KOI.

OLF Whitehouse, FL
Fri. 17 Jan Sunny, Breezy, high 60
Sat 18 Jan Sunny, High 56
Sun 19 Jan Sunny, High 61
From past experience with the cold fronts moving through the winds will be moderating on Sat & Sun.
Looking forward to seeing everyone.
The speed of the cold fronts have changed appears as if the KOI will not be as pleasant as last year. Looks like it will be a breezy Sunday. '' '' '' ''

Just for anyone that missed the KOI last year, and need encouragement to attend this year, attached are a few pictures of 2013 champ John Simpson and the fly off participants

Is it Friday yet? Looking forward to seeing everyone and flying some stunt!!!

Even though I live in the central parts of the states, this is still too far for this old man.

You lucky dogs, the weather's gonna be great

...the lows are expected to be in the upper 20's, and Florida is a high humidity cold. Leave your swim suit at home & bring a coat!

Linheart,
Glad you made it, see you on friday

If anyone is passing through Wichita on their way to King Orange, pick me up, and I'll go with you! It would be nice to get out of this cold, windy place!

Guys,
Even though this is Florida, it looks like it will be a bit cool (40's) in the mornings. A couple tips:
Charge you glow driver and starter battery for IC.
Keep the batteries inside over night and out of the breeze.
Keep your fuel inside also.
Dress in layers. Have a windbreaker for the outer layer.
See you there.
Best, DennisT

Leaving. Tomorrow. Me and Trish after work can't wait to get back to Florida. Looks like a good weekend lot warmer than the past few KOIS was raining and snow this morning in knightdale N C be good to see my family and friends
-
1) If you can't get a bump out of your engine due to cold weather, give it a shot of Ronson Lighter Fluid (aka Naptha).
2) If you can't get enough laps and don't have enough tank capacity for more, add no more than one oz. of Coleman lantern fuel per quart of glow fuel.
3) If your eStunter quits before the timer says it should, put in a bigger battery.
Thanks go out to Gerald Schamp for #1, and Dave Royer for #2. Expect miracles! Both tricks work a treat. H^^ Steve

Like it or not this will be the weather for the KOI. A change from what was predicted a week ago. Best heed the above suggestions. Dress warm, in layers; that breeze gets real cold after a couple of hours. For you pasty Yankees: Sunscreen might be a good idea.

Looka almost the same as last year except it was not windy on Sunday.
-
59 degrees and 21mph wind at about noon today, Sunday. At least the Sun is shining. I'm kinda sorta glad I didn't go, having never flown in that kind of wind.

Both days were flyable. Basic & beginner were able to put in their flights. Flying stopped because of rain & the wind picked up after that. It did get exciting for the experts as they were finishing after the noon hour. The wind made the finalists for the KOI cup demonstrate their true skill & nerves of steel. Congratulations C. C We were impressed. The wind did get best of a few planes. It was my impression that everyone had a good time & were happy that they came. Looking forward to the KOI 2015.

I'm vacationing in SUNNY Colorado.
The buzz of snow machines is just like a model contest.
-
Cold, windy, and tons of smiles sums up the contest.
It was a great weekend, with lots of great flying.

Special thanks to Randy Smith

Linheart,
Good to see you found the encouragement you needed. Nice to meet you Saturday!

Glad you guys/gals got the contest in. It was warm enough here in KANSAS if it hadn't been for the wind trying to blow me off the road.
-
We had a little bit of wind, too. ~>

In Florida, if you don't learn to fly in the wind, you're not going to do much flying.
