I Must Be Bored...
« on: November 19, 2009, 11:21:14 PM »
I visit this excellent site many times per day and find it very friendly and informative.  Plus, I get to read posts by guys I used to know 35 years ago. H^^

I was fooling around on the Members List and discovered that, out of 2274 members of record, 1262 have never made a post.  That means 55% of the current membership is non-contributing.  In addition to that, many of those have no "last activity," which I presume means they haven't even logged in. :o

So, I wonder how and why 1262 people were enrolled without any participation to follow.  This may be a sleeping dog and, if so, I apologize for kicking it.  Like I said, I was a bit bored. Z@@ZZZ

BTW, I didn't count those members.  The list has choices for formatting and I did a search of post counts from low to high.  It was around page 91 before any posters showed up about halfway down the page. ::)

Kind of like a couple clubs I'm in.  110+ members, same 25 to 30 show up for meetings, same 15 or so participate in field maintenance projects, And over the course of a week, maybe 1/2 to 2/3 will show up at the field to fly.

The question is, how many of those 1262 come here and lurk without logging in and how many registered then never came back. I assume it keeps track if they logged in.

I think it has to do with the good responses we get to some of the questions that are posted.  Then again maybe they probably think they don't know as much as they really do.  And then there is the saying that if you can't say anything good,  keep it to your self.  I have a site that I look at once in a while, it been several months since I looked at it.

Good point, John.  Up untill last May, I was pretty consistent on getting on the websites I frequent.  I'd spend a bit of time after work on my desktop and be able to touch on every one at about a 3 day cycle.  Then the company decided it didn't need us old F***s.  My wife hogs the home computer,so by the time I get on, do the various accounting items, bill paying, and such, I don't have a lot of time for the fun things.  I probably haven't been on this site for close to a month and a half, before I restarted about a week ago.

The reason I don't post as much is that most on here have forgotten more than I know.  I haven't flown in quite a while, as this is just on of the hobbies I have and my income doesn't allow me to buy $100 or more kits, engines, etc.

I don't have a wing jig, I don't have 25 engines or kits sitting around waiting to be built.  If I'm lucky I can get part of the kitchen table for a while to build on.

For some on here this is a secondary thing, not the primary hobby.  We enjoy flying around have never done a pattern ever, but probably could if we tried, however, the hobby for us is maybe different than for some of the main posters.  We aren't all members of the AMA though we'd like to be, but something else took that money.  Mine went to the NRA actually, because for me that's more important right now.

That doesn't mean I don't like CL models, or love seeing how someone else's project is coming along.  I love the contest photos, and the build threads always get looked at.  Videos of patterns flown by the experts get downloaded and reviewed making me smile.  The amount of expertise makes me a bit intimidated but I still like to come and look always.

So don't judge us too hard.  We're out here.  We love it too, but for some of us, there's always something else.

Thanks for allowing us to share, because it really makes us feel a part of something we really do care about.

Well there you go Bill...another post.  ;D  H^^

It doesn't matter how much you spend, or how much experience you have, or your skill level, knowledge, etc.

There's room for everyone. At least that's MY opinion.

Amen, Bill.  Everybody has his own priorities.  I don't fly as much control line as I would like, since I have to pretty much restrict my cl flying to when the field of my RC club doesn't have RC fliers using it.  Same for getting more proficient with my FAC level competition season.  I get to fly FF maybe once a month at the local contests, where I have to do most of my trim flying before actually flying, although my RC club also allows FF.  In fact, they allow any safe form of flying as long as it doesn't interfere with RC flying.  And the closest CL field is an almost 40 minute freeway drive for me.

This doesn't stop me from building, but financially, approaching 66 and recently having been "Right Sized" after 28 years with the company, I am glad that I've been laying kits , plans, balsa, and other supplies and equipment for the last almost 47 working years.  Hopefully, about my only future hobby expenses will be fuel, glue, and batteries.

And don't worry about not having enogh experience to speak up, pretty much everybody has a certain level of basic experience based on the length and depth of their immersion in a topic, plus a certain subset of experience and POV unique to his own circumstances.

Yes, that is impressive and there is definitely a lot of activity on this board.  I never questioned that.  My point was that all that activity is generated by half the members.  That's all.  I am not condemning anyone for being inactive and not posting.  I just thought it odd that the membership was split that way.  No malice intended!

As someone who has rarely posted here....I joined up at the
time my involvement in C/L was rapidly declining due to some
health related issues. The medications I take for a heart problem &
migraines have effectively dealt with those problems with the
side effect of greatly increased dizziness...I still read the forums
here on occasion, but my involvement in the hobby is strictly
"armchair."

EJN,  if you still like to build and finish is the time to find some one to fly for you.  That is why I stayed with racing for so long.  Just a thought. D>K

Interesting numbers Dick, indeed.  D>K

It would be great if everyone who isn't a regular poster would just stick their head in here and say "hello, my name is __________, and I am a retread, or I am just getting started, or I use to do this and thought it was dead", or something to identify yourself, and become inclusive here. There is NO ONE here that is going to jump you,or criticize you, for making your presence be known! Sure, there is a lot of different levels of participation in this hobby/sport, and one of them is beginners, which is nothing to be ashamed of! So you lurkers, silent types, introverts, feel free to say anything here and let us know you're out there. We are, after all, here for FUN!(I hope.)

I love it here and thanks to Robert for allowing us all to participate.

I love Walter Umland's kits and lust for them as I did for Becky Elliot in 9th grade.  Still beyond my reach though.  Although so was she for a while.

Thanks for the kind words and I'm around.

Take care and Best to all

As Richard states, every body welcome even beginners.  Remember we were all beginners at one time.  Remember the first contest I attended.  It was an early Rat Race.  Six planes at once on a small circle.  One young junior wound up flying a plane that was not his as his had crashed and the pilot of the plane he was flying was tangled up in flying lines.  Mr. Meriwether was busy with the side cutters.  To show how early it was, they were keeping track of laps with pencil and paper.

Bored? who's got time to be bored.  The only time I'm bored is when my wife wants me to watch something on TV with her, or when my son insists on listening to one of the so called "Intelligent Conservative" ranters on the car radio.

I supplied the venue I can't make them post..

It serves it's purpose even if they don't. These forums (here, SSW, Phil Brown's) have largely taken the place of model magazines for many - and they are continuously updated. Back in the good old days we could have hardly dreamt of such a thing.
