How many planes.....
« on: March 29, 2012, 07:45:09 AM »
..... can you put in the back of a mini van?

Trying to figure out if we will have room. Right now we need to pack 7 planes. (maybe 8 if you count a Bi-Slob <=)

Types of planes?
3 profile 46 size stunters
4 46 size full fuse stunters.
(maybe 1 Bi-Slob size stunter) <=

You are making a really good argument for removable wings.  Have you considered a small trailer?  You can rent one from Uhaul or buy a small one from one of the hardware stores and build a box on it.

I solved the plane storage problem by having a separate building, only for model planes (and some of wife's junk).

Latest count is 26 plus some free flight and R/C gliders.

How many people are we talking about?  I remember the first year I let Melvin Schuette ride out to Pawnee Rock KS with JJ and myself.  Of course JJ was mucho younger.   With our luggage, pit/tool boxes and planes.   Total 19 airplanes to fly Shoestrig Racing(3), Stunt(1), Slow Combat(can't remember how many), Scale, Navy Carrier(CL I, II and Profile).  It all depends on how you pack.  At the time I was driving a Crysler Wagon that would do 80 with out breating hard.   Had to watch out for the smokeys as the limit was 55.

In my Chevy Uplander, I beleive I could put all the planes in it with the gear needed, plus the luggage forthe wife and myself.  This year rented U-Haul 4X8 trailer to haul two planes and gear, plus luggage for wife, daughter and four grandkids.   Never again.   HB~> HB~> HB~>

A Score, Nobler, 2 Ringmaster, a CG Shoestring and some 1/2As, plus big field box and a suitcase fit in my Sienna with 3rd seat folded down. Leaves 2 seats in 2nd row + pilot and co-pilot. Long trips mean more luggage, roof rack and leaf bags + tarp gets that out of the way and still accessible w/o unpacking planes.

Use Gallaghers Sludg-O-matic (he's retiring and won't need it) and you could get a whole bunch in there.  >:D >:D  LL~ LL~ LL~

Last spring when we moved I had to put a bunch in storage at my Dad's place:
7 full stuners, two midsize, a couple profiles, one 1/2A stunter, four 1/2A  sport models.

One SAM Oldtimer, One 12' RC sailplane, one 40 size RC trainer ARC and a couple bags of this & that.

This year I have 4 new birds with removable wings....

7 should be a piece of cake...
A couple of large foam blocks with cutouts for one wing and some sandbags (empty shot bags filled with sand) to stabilize everything.
planes are captured by one wing and stand on thier nose at and angle on the other wing tip (a little foam rubber under the tip).
One set in front of cargo space one set behind them with wings staggered.
I've carried 8 full size stunters like this...plus a couple of quickee rats, and 5 combat planes...Just use lots of 1" thick foam in between everything and it will work fine.
You won't want to load and unload this mess very often, however!

Thanks guys!
Dennis by looking at your photo it makes me think we may have enough room. But we will have to leave the second row of seats in place. We will have 4 people in the van. Also there will be a cargo carrier on top of the van for bags.
Don't think I need to worry about Trophies, but the other two guys might get lucky. LL~
