How bout a brand new Event...called SPEED STUNT!
« on: February 19, 2007, 11:16:51 AM »
Lets make up a brand new event....called "SPEEEEEEED STUNT!"
Same pattern....for ease of judging?
However....
extra points awarded for the heaviest plane with the least square inches of wing area.
extra points awarded for the largest cub. inch engines
extra points awarded for the FASTEST LAP SPEEDS
extra points awarded for the FASTERST COMPLETED PATTERN...starting from the 1st flip of the prop until the model touches down on the tarmac and comes to a complete stop!
last but most important...
for the most accurately performed manly' oooooooowwwwvers with the lowest pull-outs...Any thing performed at over 1 foot altitude loses points.
Any suggestions that could enhance this wild new sport are welcome...LET YOUR WILDEST REQUESTS BE KNOWN?
Bad idea...good idea...???

There was a real nice young guy at Brodak (forget his name) who did the pattern blindfolded flying a fifteen size combat plane. Guess he'd have a shot. Mike Palko did it also, I believe. The udder guy did it better. (Sorry Mike.)

Smotzie,

I use to practice the pattern with a combat wing on a pacifier, when I was a lot younger. If I can ever get use to  the speed I will do it again.

it really quickens your reflex's and makes it seem like you have all day to complete the pattern with a stunt plane.

I finally got my field flyable and put in a few flights on Saturday and Sunday. After going to the Master Airscrew 10x7 3 blade on the PF with a Brodak 40 I finally got enough confidence to put it through the entire pattern. Last time I did that was about 1972 in Sasebo Japan Plus I haven't had a handle in my hand since June 2006.

It wasn't pretty but all the maneuvers were there.

At Brodak's Fly In, they have an event called "Junk Yard Wars."  Maybe other places have that also?

The deal is, each team is alloted a wooden orange crate and has one hour to construct a plane using the materials from the crate.  Your choice of engine.  The winner is decided by whichever plane makes the most laps (I think?).  Mike Palko is a participant.  Maybe he can clarify the details if anyone is interested.  I believe extra points are awarded for a maneuver such as an inside loop.

It is good fun and seems to draw more spectators than the other, standard events.  Last year's war finished up with a "suicide" battle something like a combat event except instead instead of ribbons, the other guy's plane was the target.

Bob Arnett did that back about 1948 at the Olathe Nats. He won Sr. stunt with a Fox 59 on about a 36" span profile. They say he was flying around 113 MPH, and blew a piston on every flight. Duke was keeping him stocked up on parts. Bob was from Great Bend Ks., and when you could get him to talk about his escapades flying stunt, it was really cool. I really miss that guy.

I remember flying a 600 square inch plane with an OS40FSR back in the early 80s. It would "run away" every so often and would certainly qualify for "Speed Stunt". Those 3.5 second laps were a thrill.

Oooh, I just looked and I still have a picture.

S?P Shultzy, I know you know this, but that was how stunt was flown back in the day. Fast, low, and daring. Any manueverr considered tough, like inverted flight, or multiple loops would be flown to pump up the score. The pattern was a moving target wasn't it?

Randy, Bruce....n gang!
Thanks for contributing to my madness..
Bruce...
what a great looking flying site...also quite a homested spread behind you...GADS! LOOK GANG! SSSSSUNSHINE AND REAL LIVE GRASS! WOW! SUMMMMA MUST BE JUST AROUND THE CORNER.

Randy...great looking Mustang! Your choices of great looking models...are outstanding!
Good stories gang!

My condolences....to everyone who thinks that my posts are taken with too much of a mean spirit.

A short time ago......there was an E mail from one of our ICON flyers, telling me in no uncertain terms that he felt offended and that I do not take our beloved control line precision aerobatical' toy airplanes serious enough!

HOLD ON!!! WAAAIT A MINUTE!
That kinda punched my memory buttons: Especially when he didn't  appreciate my attempts to make light of the NEW TREND OF THE HEAVIER-HIGHLY POTENTLY OVERPOWERED HIGHSPEED STUNTERS...that ARE THE NEW SUCCESSFUL WAVE OF THE FUTURE

(UHHH? HUH?..WHERE HAVE WE HEARD THAT BEFORE?)

That remark really JOGGLED MY MEMORY BUTTON when I first read that E mail, was that:

Times really haven't changed that much in all these years.....when it come to PAMPilots and how they perceive what THEY THINK should maditorially and morally DICK'TATE' WHAT A STUNT MODEL SHOULD LOOK LIKE...when in fact they should be more concerned how accurately that model actually FLIES THE PATTERN.

How many times have we heard flyers and  judges say stupid things like:
NICE PATTERN...but you fly too fast.
NICE PATTERN...but you fly too large or small a pattern.
NICE PATTERN...but that airplane present a too small or to large of a visual concept.

How clearly I remember the first comments from the "pure traditionalists of stunt" making rather snippy-pitchy-mean spirited razzz when Bob Baron, Jack Sheeks and Al Rabe sat their beautiful but RADICALLY DIFFERENT appearing stunt models down on the pit stage areas at the 68 nats.

GADS! THAT WAS ALMOST A LIFETIME AGO...

BACK WHEN: that long time ago, moment in time, a very young  flyer, took his horrifically ugly big yellow mulit-patched war weary, close to worn out old  twin tailed push-puller engined stunter  and then proceeded to fly the cleanest beautiful pattern that most of those ICON traditionalists had ever seen.

I was quite imbarressed when I over head many of the comments made from our pit-gallery, just how ugly and silly  that plane looked in the air...
However, when some of them observed at just how well he did on the score board.

Hummm? In cases like these...maybe, just maybe...EXPERT & ICON stunt flyers  REALLY AREN'T THE RIGHT CHOICES AND OFTEN ARE NOT QUALIFIED JUDGES..(due in part to their own preconceived ideas what a stunt plane or flyer should look like or fly like?

Bad Idea.  Fast not good.  Slow it up.  Lap times Not less than 6 seconds.  Bonus points for every 1/4 second above that.

I love fun events like SPEED STUNT. The Philly Fliers are known for our mass fly after the Brodak Flyin. It is unofficial, anyone can join in and the only reason we do it for the spectators and the fact that we don't know any better!! One year we had 12 or 13 up at once for a few laps  n~, but it got ugly real fast. One thing I will never forget is the sound of 10 or 12 Fox .35's all running in sync from the inside of the circle!!!! Awesome

This past year I had a new idea for a fun event, but we just ran out of time. Maybe this year we will pull it off? I guarantee a good time if you enter and it should be a crowd pleaser!!

Tom Skinner is the guy who flew the pattern blindfolded using his FAI .15 ship. After he flew the pattern he let me take it for a ride on the "trainer" setting. (take the tail weight off and move the control horn to the slowest hole) I wasn't insulted at the time by any means, but I also didn't think he had to change it up for me. About 1 1/2 to 2 seconds into the flight I was thanking god he gave me the trainer setting!!!  :o It was a hand full for the first few laps (trying to keep up with it). Once I got the hang of it I did ok, but it took total concentration to stay ahead of it. I have to give it to the combat guys, they know how to fly!!

Junk Yard wars is another great event. It is flown during the picnic so everyone can watch (it draws the biggest crowd of the week). The rules are simple, you have one hour to build a so called "airplane" from the orange crates powered by an engine up to .25cc displacement. The kids decorate them and compete for a concours award before the official flights. The event is won by doing 10 laps and then the most spectacular freestyle wins it. Most winners do lumshevaks, snap rolls, barrow rolls, mid airs..... you get the idea. This past year we pushed itto a new level and did a Junk Yard Wars mass fly. Thats right, all three "airplanes" at the same time. Sounds easy huh?

I used to fly at forest park, Queens ,NY. There was a group of guys there, called themselves the crazy 8's. They would fly with 8 guys in the circle at a time. The sound of all those engines running at onces was incredable. Wounder if any of them are on this site?

Don,

I agree. Having written the occasional column in Stunt News, I've had my share of email like this. I don't take the event seriously enough, I'm frivolous or don't really know enough to be writing in such an august publication. Yada, yada, yada.

My generaly response is either:    Z@@ZZZ      or      LL~

How about we take a cue from the carrier guys, and fly one fast pattern and one slow pattern with the same plane.  Don't really know how to score the event, but I never let details get in the way of a great idea. n~

My first experience seeing a "stunt plane fly a pattern" was a full size Stuntwagon flying about 100 mph with a honking McCoy 60 up front on lines near 100 feet long! **)

I am going to fly the "super light" Sterling Yak 9 really fast for a flight in OTS this year.  Think I'll slap an 8-8 on the Veco 19BB and lean her out!  Just for "old times sake"! **)

Like some have said, when you fly a combat ship through thw pattern, you feel like it's in slow motion when you pull out the "stunt ship"! **)

I love your story about STUNTWAGGGGGON' with a 60 engine up front. That brings pack memories of my old Stunt wagon that I had a K&B 45 up front. Due to those short gears...I too ran an old amber colored 8-9 plastic see thru prop...(that had that inner metal ring at the shaft?
here is the after-mash of hitting the ground after practicing flying multi-line wrapped loops.
Tim Dunlop and I made almost twins of these models...virtually alike (due to a batch of various color dopes that we pour'd together just to save $$$. I copied all the kit parts and often for the rush of it...would fly together in the same circle. Here is a photo Tim took of me...trying to re-kit the pieces for another rebuild after he SPOOKED ME INTO THE GROUND, when I tried to fly inverted  under one of his level laps.
Leo Mehl...do you remember those two old models from Delta Park and how I used to frighten the Crappoldo out of Tim..by following him through multi loops, line wrapping them until we could unwrap them and then forgetting HOW MANY LINE WRAPS...were involved. I would yell the number of wraps.
GUESS YOU KNOW SOME OF THE FLYERS WHO WOULD HAVE THE "UPPER HAND ON SPEED STUNT!
Phil Granderson, Dirty Dan Ruthlessford', and Howard Rushskins' from their YEARS OF COMBAT EXPERIENCE...would have an extreme advantage, don't you think?

Have you seen Larry Scarinzini fly OTS with his Scared Kitten on a current FAI combat motor with a BIG venturi...???   No wonder the Kitten was Scared   ~^  ~^
I clocked him at about 3.1 - 3.2 lap times....  Wanna see it again!!!   Larry was just grinning!!   ;D

Thats what we used to fly in the late 40's and early 50's. Now I prefer 6.5 second laps so I can take a nap between manuvers. Which most people clam I do anyway. In the wrong direction but it helps the judges to figure out what the hell I am doing.
