Wichita Contest, august 11 & 12
« on: August 11, 2012, 02:01:58 PM »
Elwyn and I left Tulsa around 6:45 am on saturday, and arrived in Wichita around 9:45 am. The contest was already in session.

Racing was first on the agenda, and they ran both Class 2 Goodyear (scale race) and Goldberg. Class 2 was won by Dale Gleason, flying a Pole Cat powered by a Fox .15 Schneurle and 2nd place was won by Melvin Schuette flying a Lil Quickee also powered by a Fox .15 Schneurle. Goodyear was also won by Dale Gleason, flying a Fox .35 powered Shoestring, and second was won by Jeff Johnson also flying a Fox .35 powered Shoestring.

Classic stunt had one entry, Bob Brookins, flying an Oriental powered by a Brodak .40.
( He won!) Marvin Denny and I judged Classic.
Profile stunt had 3 entries:
1st place: Joe Gilbert   T-6 Texan          Saito .40 by Bob Reeves
2nd place: Doc Holiday  WBN Doodlebug    OS .40fp
3rd place: Bob Brookins  Primary Force  Silverfoxx .35
Lew Woolard and the CD, Kevin Seaton judged profile stunt.

Afterwards, down at the combat circle, Cary Minor, Tom Stiegler, and Jeff Johnson were flying FAI combat. Elwyn and I left to go get a motel; we settled on another scenic super 8 motel.

We saw Jim and Lova Kraft! We were very happy to see them both again. Jim signed up to fly OTS on sunday.

Melvin and Brenda Schuette had about half of their inventory out for sale. They had:
Bulk stranded lines: - .012 - .015, - .018, .021, lead out wire, solid lines in several sizes, Sig reels, both fat and skinny, Cables for handles, hemostats, spools of copper wire for wrapping handles, glow plub clips, Fox, Merlin, and Nelson glow plugs, bladder connectors, and bladder end plugs, syringe connectors,(they snap on a syringe, and secure the fuel tubing) Silicon and surgical fuel tubing, Control horns, bellcranks, cox glow plug wrenches, Brass Eyelets, line crimps, Cox black widow tanks, (no vents)
and 4 sizes of bladder tubing.

Melvin also has a 12 volt battery powered cash register.
His website is : mbsmodelsupply.com (fixed it)
His email is :mbschuette@cox.net

More tomorrow.

A few pics. A couple of small birds of prey even stopped by to observe the action.

We had a great time at Wichita. I had not flown but a couple of times since my heart surgery in march, but did get out on friday to put up about 4 flights on my Ringmaster/McCoy Red Head 35. I made it through both officials without crashing, and some of it did not look to bad, so I was a happy camper. We really had great weather for Wichita. It was in the middle to upper 70's when we started flying, and with the cloud cover it was stunt heaven. The wind did come up and was a little gusty before we got done flying, but all in all it was very nice. And the food was great as well as the fun aspect of the get together on saturday night. I am still smiling from all of the people that I got to talk to. I have said it before, and I will say it again. It is the people that make this event so much fun, and some of the best were at Wichita. Thanks to all of the Wichita people that worked so hard to put it all together, and to De Hill coming up from Tulsa to judge. And last but not least, thanks to Elwyn being there to take pictures of the whole happening.

Saturday night, (August 11) The Wichihawks held a free evening meal for all the contestants and clubmembers. They didn't even have a jar or can that you could put a donation in. The banquet was held at the Dawson United Methodist church that Lew and Julie Woolard attend. Rhee Denny put in an appearance, and we were all glad to see her.  The food consisted of Barbeque brisket, fried chicken, and every homemade side dish and dessert that you can imagine. Topeka is the only other club that I know of that serves a free evening meal to the contestants and clubmembers.

Unfortunately, at this time, I don't have the names of all the clubmembers wives who cooked the meal.but if I find out, I'll post them.

Sunday, August 12 Old Time Stunt

Marvin Denny and I judged Old Time Stunt. We were lucky to get the event completed before the wind came up.
Jim Lee flew last and got a little wind. His Atwood sounded a little rich, but had plenty of power to complete the pattern.
Doc Holiday's Fox .35 rejected it's muffler 3/4 of the way through his last flight.

1st - Joe Gilbert - Ringmaster - OS .20 fp                       295
2nd - Jim Kraft - Ringmaster - Mccoy .35 Redhead            273
3rd - Jim Lee - Go Devil - Atwood .61 on Ignition             271
4th - Bob Brookins - Humongous - Silverfoxx Tower .46     265
5th - Doc Holliday - International Stunt  Winner - Fox .35  245

Sunday, continued.

Advanced: Judged by Lew Woolard and the Contest Director, Kevin Seaton.

1st - Bob Redmond - Legacy - Eflite power .25 - 532.5
2nd - Bob Brookins - Strega - ROJETT .65  -        397.5

Expert: judged by Lew Woolard and Kevin Seaton.

1st -  Dale Gleason - Impcat - Orwick .64 with McCollum piston - 555
2nd - Jim Lee - Sunflyr - OS .46 SF (?)                                    - 539.52
3rd - Joe Gilbert - Hawker Martin Sea Fury                               -   45
3rd - Joe Gilbert T-6 Texan - Saito .40 - Bob Reeves rework      -  492.5

Joe was flying his newish Hawker Martin Sea Fury, and the outboard wing fell of during the reverse wingover. Joe later said that it was the result of building too light of a wing.

The wind gods then attacked his T-6 Texan during flight and landing.

Concours - Bob Redmond

Sportsmanship - De Hill

Great Contest!

He didn't. He told me to write that down as his engine.

I guess he wanted to see if anyone read this stuff.

the Wichita contest is held at Planeview Park that is a multiuse facility.  It is located on the south side of Wichita on Oliver Street. It has two concrete circles and three grass circles. It is about 1 mile east of the Wichita aircraft museum, and about 1/2 mile north of the Boeing plant. The Wichihawks are always looking for new blood.

So if you are planning on moving, look at Wichita for your new home!

Attendance was down this year at the Wichihawks contest, just as it has been down in most contests in this country.

The economy is part of it, and perhaps a lot of us are growing older, and don't travel as much as we used to.

I wonder what the contest scene will look like  5 years from now?

It was great getting to Wichita for the weekend and to see everybody.   Thanks to De for the report and Elwyn for the great photos.  Also great to see Jim Kraft and his lovely wife.  Also thanks to the Whichihawks for the contest and the Saturday evening feed.  I'm not in the stunt photo as I was down on the carrier area treading water.  Beat Jeff Johnson and Fred Cronnewett(spelling) for first in Classic Carrier and only entry in Profile Carrier.   Had changed engines on the Bearcat and forgot to check throttle workings.  By third flight I was getting better with it.  Also De you forgot the Gluedobbers do a good feed even tho donations are given.

Anyway I can't thank  my good Lord for all the friends I have met and flew with using model planes.

I think we all share De's concerns about the reductions we are seeing in contestants at our local meets. Certainly not good, but it's easy to understand....the economy in general and all that entails: gasoline prices, lodging prices, food prices, etc, the declining numbers as age catches up with us, and the simple fact that what we do just isn't all that popular anymore, it's difficult to do, requiring perserverance and hard work to obtain the skills to do it.

So with all that negativity, where's the positive? It must be there somewhere, else we wouldn't do it, would we?

Like Doc has so elequently pointed out...it's the people involved, in this case, the Wichihawks. The Seatons, the whole family. The Dennys. Woolards. Talmans. All of them.

What is lacking in quantity is made up for by quality.

A wonderful contest in every aspect, thank you, Wichihawks.          dg
