Horizon Pt-19

Acquired one of these at a swap meet. Was told by several that the controls are pretty " fast". Was suggested to add noseweight to slow it down. Wouldn't it be better to tinker with longer control horns, handle spacing? Don't want to go as far as changing BC or pushrod connection in the wing. This airframe  as very few flights on it.

Hey Steven:

If it's too fast because of CG, then change the CG.  Otherwise, yes, narrow up the controls at the handle or work on the elevator horn.

Lots of folk are still stuck on "use a Hot Rock and add noseweight to calm things down"; there's a chance that's what you were getting.

Do you know how to tell if it's CG or controls from the flight behavior?

   Do a search here for threads with my name and I'm sure i recounted my experiences with this model. it is too short coupled, needed nose weight (four ounces to be exact!) and I lengthened the elevator horn by at least 3/4" or more, I would have to measure it to be sure but it was around that much. I bought the copmbo kit with the Evil.36 engine and mine was a real piece of crap. I traded the engine off for a built Sakitumi with an LA.40 on it. I put an OS FP.40 on the PT-19 and need to finish trimming it out again. I bought an extra wing while Horizon still had them and hope to build a profile stunt/scale model that looks more like a PT-19 with a longer tail and nose.

Probably be several weeks before I get a chance to fly it. I have an evo .36 to power it.   I need to see  where the c.g. is compared to where it  should be. I have some adj. control horns, I think I can get 2" out of those. I'm short on spare time currently, my wife is recovering from  minor surgery so I've been promoted to Chief .

Hi Steve,
I've helped trim a few of them out and they all flew pretty good after trimming.  The proper C.G. Is the key to get it to fly good.  The C.G. Is set at 15% + or - of average cord.  Use a longer nylon control horn on the stabilizer and slow the controls down.  It was beneficial to use a hard point handle with adjustable line spacing.  If I remember correctly, the spacing should be set around 3-3/4".  Use different weight mufflers, spinners, and props to achieve the proper C.G.  And as a last resort, add small amounts weight at the tail.

I found the manual online, CG is 2.5" from the LE. I usually use a safety prop nut(alum.), but I have a heavy brass one if needed. Are the mounting hole spacing on the Evo.36 the same as another engine?

Mount spacing on the Evo .36 is the same as other popular small case 36 engines-ie:Magum 36, Thunder Tiger 36 or Aero Tiger 36. Also Super Tigre 34, OS 32 or Webra 32. Not with OS LA, FP or Brodak 40 engines though. FWIW: Heavy brass prop nuts can rob power and RPM's from engines. However, with as much power as an EVO 36 has it probably won't make much difference in this case.

While centering the BC, I had issue with the upline hanging up. It seems the BC connection swings to the end of the BC and gets stuck against a rib opening. Too far in to get a Dremel or a knife. I suppose I could cut an access panel in the wing sheeting. The other issue is BC was never centered so down line is shorter than up.  That one I can solve.
