Great filler!!
« on: June 25, 2014, 09:42:28 AM »
Not sure where to Post this product, move if necessary.

This has got to be one of the best fillers I've ever used. Certainly not used for strength, but great for spaces and feathering.

Lord knows I get spaces and my work requires feathering.   n~

Entire 8oz. plastic jar weighs 115 grams, jar included.

I have no reason to keep secrets so I thought I'd share.

My Ringmaster loves the stuff! na#   LL~ LL~ LL~

Be sure to CA over the top of it after you sand it smooth. Dope will soften it and it WILL lift! I have used this in the past and quit using it because of this.Superfil it lighter, stronger and will not lift with dope. Available from Wicks or aircraft spruce.

As Bob says, it will hate it when you put dope on it. And it's hardly a secret, there have been horror stories about it since the early 90's, when it was first distributed by Carl Goldberg as "Model Magic" filler. It quickly became known as "Model Tragic" since it is not compatible with most hobby finishes.

I won't be using dope over it.

Lacquer base sealer has no effect on it.

Haven't tried dope over lacquer sealer. Might give that a shot.

Thanks for the replies.

Dope will soften the lacquer sealer and it will cause adhesion problems and bubbling and crazing!

About the only thing that will work successfully over this STUFF...is Rustoleum, and a lot of it isn't fuel proff ao generally you have to put a two part polyurethane over it as a top coat...that works well but can get a little heavy if you're not very cautious with the color and top coat buildup.

Like Sparky said "Superfil" is the answer to filling and fillets etc.  Marvelous stuff, and relatively strong!

This stuff is the same thing as hardware store vinyl spackling compound, and has been covered here extensively as a product to avoid. Almost nothing will stick to it, and will even pop up and come loose over time. I cringe everytime I have to stock the shelves at the hobby shop with it!

Yes it does. Even epoxy primer causes it to swell slightly. Again, this is all well-known.

I've already used lacquer based wood sealer over this filler and it had no effect on it.

I've also used 5 minute Epoxy resin with no issues. I will not be using any Epoxy primers.

The next test will be to apply dope over it.

My goal is to eliminate dope alltogether, I've mentioned this before.

The thing about this stuff is it may not lift today but it will in the long run. The only way I ever got it to work was if it was very thin and then flood thin CA over it. Sealing it,then prime but it still always remained soft. Use at your own risk.

I see Super Fil is a filled epoxy product, do you think it could be used for making prop moulds?

Well, not really. Or it depends how many props you want to pop out from the mould. And how much compression you can use without breaking the mold. In the end Superfill is quite weak as its primary function is to fill small gaps and to be sanded with ease.
There are much better ceramic or metal filled epoxies available for mold making.
But maybe it can be used for some single-use molds, especially when final strenght is not an issue. But I would not.

Then why bother to test dope? All you have to do is read what others have said about this stuff and put a end to it.

I have used the Hobbylite and other such products.  Never again.  As mentioned, dope softens it and it never re-hardens.  At least, it did not for me.  I had to remove it and replace it with Epoxolite.

Since then I have always used Epoxolite but now I heard Sig discontinued it.

I have a jar of something called "Micro-fill" which appears to be similar to the Hobbylite and other such products.  On the jar, it says "when applying butyrate dope over Micro-fill, filler must be thoroughly dry and sealed with any polyester resin or epoxy finishing resin prior to applying butyrate dope."  So, like the others, this stuff is not compatible with dope products so use at your own risk, even if you take the stated steps.

Anyone try the Elmer's wood filler?  I smoothed some of it on a piece of scrap wood, let it dry, sanded it, then applied clear dope.  The dope softened it but when the dope dried I could sand it and it appeared to re-harden, unlike the Hobbylite or Model Magic fillers.  Still, I hesitate to use it without more information about its compatibility with dope.

How does Super Fil compare to Aeropoxy Light?  I have not used either of these.

I have been using Elmers slightly yellow/tan filler for years under dope without problems. Like Charles I never use it for fillets, just for filling gaps if needed. I have never had a problem with it swelling or softening with dope, and no problems with with bubbling up or coming loose. I only use butyrate dope though.

Jim,

Congratulations to your Grandson for his acheivements in General Aviation.  H^^

I was almost 18 when I started.

I put dope over this filler with no issues.

Possibly an improved version of the product? Says you can put dope over it on the jar.

Jim,

Tell your Grandson I told you to tell him this.
