Got a handle on it.
« on: October 22, 2007, 11:10:08 AM »
 OK Guys;

   Didn't want to spend what the were asking for a new handle. I modified the first one I did and put it on the bias at 10 degrees, it works well for me at that angle. This is what I came up with, what do you think? Yes I'm claiming bragging rights. LOL It is Cherry, Walnut and Oak.

Bill G.  the handle looks great.  Is this for the giant Ringmaster?  Have I missed the flight reports on it or are you still getting a mortgage for the dope??  Have fun,  DOC Holliday

  That appears to be a "Magnum" handle.  George Aldrich used to have something to do with them if I remember correctly.  The Combat guys really liked them as they were light with very little overhang.  Some of the users of those handles put balsa wood side pads on them to get a better feel to the hand grip.
  I still have a couple of them in the junk barrel.

I've got one of those 'Magnum' handles that was doctored with by cutting the back side flat, and sliding a bicycle handle bar grip over the center.  I used it so much that the sullivan line clips finally fell apart and the cable has a small fray.  I had to clean the safety thong a few years back cause it was too gross to handle. Eventually I'll throw a new cable in it and it'll be all set to use again.

If that is GMA's hand, the handle is upside down because he flew clockwise. George said he held handles upside down when flying someone else's CCW plane. Perhaps the locking nut goes on the bottom. Is either side marked "UP"?

  Mine are not marked with any up or other  identifier as to the up end, but the finger notches and the bias of the hand grip is such that the knob is on the top end.  so  probably you are correct in that  that is NOT GMA's hand.  I once heard that he designed that handle.  Thought just hit me--- Could it be that that really IS his hand and the lines are connected to the plane in reverse??

The mystery hand is that of Michael Schmitt of the Chicagoland Circle Cutters.  The flight becomes a little more of a trick when you realize that Mike is
flying with his left hand and taking the picture with his right hand, not that easy for a lot of us right-handers.  Those Magnum handles are still seen out
at Ned Brown Forest Preserves, but are now being used mostly by sport and stunt fliers.

Sweet looking handle!! One that looks that good needs to be in a special case that you only open when you're already at the field gassed up and need to connect it to the lines n~ **)
