For Your Information: Scary!

For your information and I know it is RC however this just may not impress the FAA under current situations.

This is exactly the problem for RC folks. No doubt they will have a supersonic model as soon as they decide to do it.  Now just exactly how will they (government) get control of this kind of activity? They will legislate it of course. I urge you all to think of the possibilities these models bring to life. Expect a new group of laws involving RC in the future.

As far as I know the FAA doesn't regulate Europe.  That's where this video comes from.

Dutch, I believe. Looks like the guy works in "high quality, innovative medical products to the healthcare industry"

The Germans and maybe Dutch seem to be the ones in the world for R/C speed. Except, USA is pretty fast in slope gliders: their World Record speed is close to 400 mph.

Where doesn't matter. What does. These things are weapons. Sooner or later some one will use them.

Everything is a weapon. If safety were a concerns, cars and gasoline would be banned immediately.

They've already blown past 400 and now approaching 500;

Wow...

my information was several months old...

And I bet the guy holding the radar wasn't behind the wall just to steady his aim.

I am not sure where the records done with radar count. In motorized speed classes FAI requires a timed distance (optical sensors, I think) but that would never work with DS gliders.

An interesting achievement but you have to wonder about how quick things are taking place at such speeds. The slightest distraction (a sneeze or coughing fit or maybe a gnat in your eye) and oops.   ~^

I don't think the FAA is worried about speed per se' although the AMA should be.  Flying something 500 mph 50 ft. away will kill somebody eventually.  Probably a hapless spectator.

The FAA concern is unmanned aerial vehicles.  Right now you can buy off the shelf a GPS, a radio, and build a very small computer into a plane that can be programmed to take off, fly somewhere, do something like take pictures or something nasty, and fly back, or whatever else you want.  Just think about putting a few pounds of Semtex into a giant scale RC plane and flying it off and into somebody's house or office.  Unfortunately the hardware is there to do it.

BTW, it appears that the FAA considers control line kites and isn't interested in it at all.  Virtually no potential for terrorist attacks.
