Finally, the finished Vanloo Chipmunk
« on: March 07, 2008, 10:24:34 AM »
.......and not a moment too soon. With the VSC only a few days away, I'll get the first and only test flights on it this Sunday, then off it goes to AZ. There is a tremendous amount of orange peel in the paint, but it's just going to have to stay that way untill after VSC. No time to sand and buff it out. I don't think the dope is cured enough for that anyway. Still, I'm happy with the way it came out. It represents my personal best effort to date. I've got a LOT to learn about finishing but I think this one's not too shabby. I hope it flies well!

Thanks to:
Walter Umland for producing this fine kit.
Gary Widmer for agreeing to sell it to me.

Special thanks to all the great guys here at StuntHanger that replied to my posts and helped with advice and encouragement.

The Chip is 585 sq in., Weighs 47.6 oz, and has a Brodak .40, and is finished in dope.

LOL! No, sorry. I usually prefer a finished cockpit without the pilot.

Beautiful, Clint.
Looks neat and clean.
Good choice following the original scheme, makes it look like it is a model with real acro airplane heritage.
Enjoy the contest, I'll look forward to seeing you another time.

First flights with the Chipmunk today went good. First flight was a very short shakedown flight. Second flight flew the entire pattern (not real well) and engine quit within 5 laps after the pattern. It's nose heavy, but I'll worry about that stuff later. Didn't want to push my luck this close to VSC, and we were over blacktop!
Pete Cunha with his Smoothie, and Tom Hagler with his Oriental, also put up some practice flights today and both are ready to go. Pete is driving out there with the planes while Tom and I are flying out on Wed. Should be a blast!

Clint's too modest. The 'Munk looked great in the air, and his pattern wasn't too shabby for as much practice as we're all getting. VSC is indeed going to be a blast!

Mikey! Welcome back to stunt!

Clint,
I can't see it from here in Rescue. When you coming up again. Bring some friends. The field is getting better every week. I planted some more grass to start filling in better up towards the house. Good luck at VSC. Hope to attend in the next year or 2.

The plane looks even better in person.  Didn't get to see it fly, but, the wind came up before my flight.  Chickened out with the Spitfire as there is a gravity hole on the east side of the #2 circle.  DOC Holliday

Day 1 of Classic put my flight is some pretty nasty wind gusts. I decided to go up anyway and nearly lost the model in the clover (inches from a total disaster!). The guys using more power than me had better luck in the wind. Day 2 put my flight in the morning with calm air, which gave me a golden opportunity for a good flight. But, for some reason the the plane kept getting loose in any outside turn. I found out later in the hotel room that the tip weight hatch had dissapeared along with all the weights inside! After Fridays flights I had taken the time to tighten every bolt on the model, but I seem to have forgotten that one. Oh well.
Oh, and the tail wheel wire broke off inside the fuse some time during Friday morning practice. Mike Haverly was kind enough to let me use his mobile hobby shop to make a tail skid out of a busted prop that Ty gave me.
Good news is that the Chip is still in one piece and shows promise!

Hi Clint, it was great meeting you and your group and letting me share the table at the banquet.  Especially Tony Drago, as he is one I used to read alot about.  In my pit box I have a weight box with part of a rib and covering I found down at the practice circle.  It is blue paint on the lid.  I also have a small tail wheel found at circle two when I was getting ready for a flight.  Glad your plane is intack,  DOC Holliday

Doc, the hatch cover I'm missing is red and I have the tail wheel.

I guess someone else is missing stuff off their planes too. LL~
