Finally Ready For Paint
« on: August 27, 2010, 09:53:38 AM »
It has taken close to three years on and off to get this Beast to this point.  LOL  Buit the SDR is finally ready for Primer and Paint. Lite Yellow base with Green Trim. Special graffics by Louis Rankin in Black.

Nice observation Howard. You surprise me by not saying anything about the "Jug" being on the inboard side. It's actually a Saito 1.82 2 cylinder 4 stroke. Little bit of overkill probably but it seemed like the right thing to do at the time.  LL~ LL~ VD~

Well, Einstein said insanity was doing the same thing over and over again and each time expecting a different outcome. So I suppose this isn't insane at all since I'm sure no one has tried this before.

Just don't say before you fly it: "Hey, y'all, watch this!"

I wonder what that "Ringmaster Delux" would look like in a 90 inch span with a DA 150 on the nose. HMMMMM food for thought.  :X

Bill,

You shrunk!!!!

I told you that you were nuts when we did the ribs.

I was right.

You are doing a great job on it and I am anxious to see flying pictures. Have you found anyone big enough to fly it?

When Young Daniel flies his 2X Flite Streak he is frequently tugged to his toes...uses both hands and has a throttle . I have seen him fly a full pattern and pretty much junk for an hour or so....
Ted was fortunate enough to be flying it when the (infrared) throttle signed off....about a 15 minute flight at  3/4 throttle...he doesn't fly it uch any more....
Have fun!

While my ni-starter charges( ok I forgot) so I can go fly in a little bit just thought I would check the forum and look at some post that I have not had a chance to look at.

Guess to late as everyone has already made every comment about the incredible shrinking Bill.

Hope everyone here realizes that before long Bill will be able to fit in the cockpit and have a very unfair advantage.
Just so much easier to fly when you are inboard the aircraft. HB~>

Bill, don't forget to put tape lines on the canopy so you can align maneuvers to the tee. /DV

For the rest of us lines on our sunglasses will have to do( making my glasses tonight) LL~

Oh- Yea

 Rich;

I will comment to you the same way I have to others who have said the same thing to me. I have seen the Mega Streak fly in person and on video. Now I have seen Dan go up on his toes like you say. Why if it does all this to you do you still have that grin from ear to ear. Think there might be a small amount of showmanship involved?

I also will have throttle control with a shut off option. The throttle is from U-Tronics and Clancy Arnold. I rigged it to the throttle on the engine with a detent. Go into the detent and the engine shuts down. It has not failed in bench testing.

So Rich Peabody, you will be at Brodaks in 2011, I offer you the handle, what say you?

  "Billy G"  n1

Part of the "show" is that Dan flies the big Streak at nearly 4 second lap times   :o , which adds both to the "show" and real life line tug. Longer lines and reasonable lap times should tame the Ringmaster enough, don't you think?

I have flown a couple of Windy's planes....plenty enough "tug" for me....

George L. Gaydos Jr. built a double size Ringmaster years ago....Windy flew it and allowed as how it needed 100' lines...

My SV is plenty big...

Hi Bill....
We took the 2X Ring for a flight at the Scale contest after George died....I believe that his wife Diane took it home and hung it with the rest of George's stuff....but, as mentioned, that was 16 years ago....
Efforts to reach her were not productive, but I suppose that I should try again......George was a world class Scale builder and a sparkplug in the GSCB....

I'll take you up on the Handle offer!
You must first promise to pick me up from the next county when the fuel runs out! LL~
I do have a BIG OLD anvil that can be chained to my belt.

Let us know when you test fly it so we can all watch the sky and pick you up were ever you may land.

This reminds me of the 8ft with four .29s B-29 Enola Gay that we flew for the US Bicentennial 4th of July event us locals held.
The only day we ever flew it.
After getting all 4 running then run out to the center and I grab Bobby by the belt loop for the first test flight.
This turned out to be unnecessary, barely.
Bobby could lean back at what seemed 45deg and firmly plant his feet every step and was ok.
This was on 70ft .018s. Bobby had about 50lbs over me.

Years later Bobby's Dad was hauling the B-29 out to the trash and I told him I would take it home and hang it in the shop. Might resto it one day if someone will fly it. I'll watch

Hang on tight Bill! LL~

To use a scientifically correct term, it was ginormous!

I remember seeing parts of George Gaydos' B-17 under construction as a kid, it was going to use GI Joes for the crew members. He sold what he built to a R/C flyer before he passed away, I think he said he realized he'd never actually finish it.

His P-38 Yippee that won C/L Scale at the Nats was amazing too. One of the guns actually fired!

Bill,

Checkout aircraft supply places near you. Most are near an airport. Many carry Randolph products. That is how we get it here in the Dallas area. The Randolph dope is totally compatible with Brodak. Brodak crystal clear is special made for Brodak and probably is not available at a Randolph dealer. Talk to the dealer about available colors and special color orders. Military spec colors can be made.

I agree, I'm going to try Randoph's  from Aircraft Spruce like Howard says.  The Home built aircraft community loves those guys, I know I have a free catalog from a guy I sit next to at work that's building an RV 7 or something (can't keep the names straight), he says he and all the others he knows gets everything from Aircraft Spruce.  You can try the local places, but beware the mark up! make sure it isn't more than what you will spend in shipping from the spruce monsters!!

I should qualify my previous snotty comment.  It could be that Brodak dope is better than Randolph for our purposes, and that could be because Brodak dope has more expensive stuff in it.  Both companies would be subject to the same EPA rules, so I reckon there is some free-market reason why Brodak costs more than Randolph.

 Howard;

I was under the impression that Brodak Dope was made by Randolph. They are one and the same . Am I wrong?

I don't know.  I think Windy had some input to customize Randolph for model use.
