Eyelet Pliers II
« on: February 21, 2006, 09:53:07 AM »
Wanted to post an update on sourcing eyelet pliers.
I was contacted by Carl Shoup about having them made.
I sent him samples of the size thimbles I need to produce
eyelets.  Will keep the forum updated as information becomes
available.

What is an eyelet plier? I bought a pair of the so called Swedging pliers. Not enough leverage to adequately crimp the brass tubing.  Very weak pliers that deform easily. Available at Harbor Freight for a buck and a half

Hi Mike,
Eyelet pliers are used to crimp [reform] a specific size brass thimble.
The application we are using them for is to make eyelets for our control lines.
Many say that we should buy them from existing vendors, but so far the guys are not totally happy with what they are buying and besides, pliers in hand we can make them for less than a penny each, line costs appx two cents a foot and if you do the math thats a pretty good saving that can go towards something else ya just gotta have.  As for the crimper's, sounds like you need a bigger pair  :P

to Mike Foley,

Carl's swaging pliers are for use with copper tube. Brass is much harder, and has been known to fatigue (e.g., inside fuel tanks from vibration, other places, after cold working).

I like Carl's pliers! Takes, as he will repeat firmly, about 50 squeezes, rotating regularly, to get them right.

Hi Lou,
Gotcha, thanks.  I have contacted Carl and sent him some thimbles of the size I would like to convert into eyelets.  As of this post I have not heard back from him but I suspect that is because of the VSC event.  I will post an update when I hear back from Carl.
