Evo .61 R/C for controline use.
« on: August 26, 2008, 10:17:26 AM »
Anybody out there ever try using the Evo .61 R/C for controline?  I am thinking of getting one for my Score.  The price is right and the .36 seems to be a jewel.  Just curious.

Andy,

Thanks for the kudio's on the .36CL.

I think you might find it hard to balance your Score if you take out the ST51 and replace it with our EVO 61. I haven't done any CL development on this engine because it is a bit heavy for our uses ... that being said I do have something in development that might be a great alternative to the ST51. But I can't tell you anymore right now. I suggest you save your pennies for the next release.

Pete

Pete,

You are correct, the EVOs and most R/C motors are way too heavy for our taste.  Yes, think light, very light, when you develop C/L motors.

We had a Beginner entry at the Evergeen Museum "Country Classic" last weekend, flying a Score with the recommended OS .46LA-S. While it lacked 'authority', it did fly it reasonably well. This leads me to think that Andy's ST G.51 is not running as it should, or something is simply wrong on the setup and trim. I've suggested to Andy that he compare the peak rpm with another G.51, on the same prop. If they're pretty equal, then get back out there and start trimming that plane!  R%%%%  H^^ Steve

Yes you did make the recommendation and if there was one other ST 51 flying at my field I would do that but there isn't.  Bummer.  The score seems to fly fine in very low breeze conditions, but any wind say above 5 or 6 mph and things really get squirrelly.  Like it has been known to tumble, sacred the "you know what" out of me.  I have tried various props with various results but none fixed the overall problem of lack of authority in the overheads.  I have one last thing to try and that is pull a head gasket out of the engine, I currently have three to keep it from running away.  Maybe I should just let it rev up and play with props, but I am afraid of overheating and loosing the engine between the middle to the end of the run.  Oh well the search continues.

I know this probably isn't going to help Andrew.... but I just maidened a Score w/ST 51 today. Its not my plane, but I did put it all together for the owner.... so I got the first few flights on it.  It went together ok, but I did replace some hardware that was in the kit. Nothing fancy, just stuff that worked better. I did my best on flap/elevator alignment, and set linkages and throws exactly per the book. The leadouts were placed in the middle of each respective slot. CG set at 4 1/8" from LE, and 1oz of weight on the outboard tip. Stock muffler (replacing w/Tongue next week), APC 11x6, and 10% Nitro/25% Castor.  60 ft lines ....

Ran the motor in 3 times on the bench ..... 3oz at a time.  Did NOT run well at first, but by the 3rd 3oz bench-run, it had settled down nicely.  Between the owner and myself..... we put up 7 flights before one of the landing gear blocks gave way on a hard landing.

The last several flights, the wind had kicked up to 15mph or so ...... still flew pretty well in that breeze. I did several wingovers, and while the lines did get light, it wasn't anything that had me looking to clean my shorts. On my last flight (#6) I flew inverted a few laps and did a couple of horiz-8's ..... and the motor was just starting to show a 4-2-4 break.  After the flight, the owner asked about that and thought it sounded cool. LOL!

Of course it has some trim issues to take care of, but considering what we put it through today (including the wind), it was 100% successful and the owner is extremely happy. It does pull hard on level flight, and takeoffs/landings seem to be a breeze! (Except the last landing .... ballooning up into the wind makes for a hard landing. LOL!)

Andrew, sorry I didn't get any RPM readings. I'll try to remember to grab my tach tomorrow.  Landing gear is all fixed so we'll be taking it up again.  I know this isn't helping you much (except rubbing it in, which is NOT intentional), but my point is that I built this Score per the manual, so there wasn't anything funky about the setup of plane or motor ....

Hope you get it sorted out ...... you've got something unusual going on !!

Fly Safe!  Larry (Larrys4227)

No, they are going to take the ball bearings, all that extra finning off the casting, make it fit the ST60 mount spacings, have more power, weigh 12 oz, run smoother, and sell for about $149.95. Gotta love it.

Be interesting to see what they can do with the 52 NX at 14 1/2 oz. My ST 51 is 11 1/8 oz. and my ST 60 is 12 3/4 oz. and I thought they were heavy. Heck their 46 NX is 13.76 oz. compared to a ST 46 at 9 3/8 oz. All weights are without mufflers.
