Engine recommendation needed
« on: August 11, 2013, 07:46:44 PM »
Looking for recommendations for a 25 size engine to use for a debolt continental. Has 40 wing span, only has room for 3oz  tank to get thru a classic pattern. Asking to much?

OS .25LA would do it fine, as would a Brodak .25. Personally, I'd go with the OS, but I'd also spend the extra $ to get the aluminum backplate and a real needle valve assembly. I don't know which would cost less after the upgrades of the OS.  H^^ Steve

I hate do this but I must...
While the previous recommendations were good I have to make one here that I feel is better.
It is a little more difficult to find but there are some around...OK...

The ideal engine for this airplane, since it is relismall and builds very light with a little care is an OS FP20 with the Brett Buck setup.  Just search the foum for Brett Buck FP20.

It doesn't get any better than this.

The 25LA is still available and works straight out of the box like a 20FP. Once it gets some run time it should make it on 3 oz (although I am sure we could get more fuel in the airplane with a custom tank).

What?  You of all people!!  I've run several LA25's and they typically use about 3.5 oz of fuel for the modern pattern even here in Tucson...Hot and High...
Of course I won't disagre with what you said, but my FP20 is more consistent, at least as powerful and uses a little less than 3 oz of 10% nitro fuel with 22% oil for a 6.5 minute run.
I also agree that a larger tank even as much as 4+oz could be fashioned to fit in the Continental...however the FP20 is more fun and runs really sweet!
I built mine fom an FP25 case and crank with the FP20 sleeve, piston, and head.  It's now going in a Feno!

The last one I built I cut a notch into the leading edge. I flew it with a Fox 19 and later with a Fox 29. It is a very quick turning plane ,very much like a Flight Streak.
