Engine choice for a Sig Chipmunk
« on: January 01, 2014, 09:24:17 PM »
Hey guys, I've been ruminating on powerplants for my recently purchased Sig Chipmunk.

I've decided that I want to go glow, but the question now is what engine?

I have a OS 40H sitting in it's box in the roof, and it wouldn't take much to get one of Randy's NVA's and venturi's to get it sorted.

Or I could by a .46LA, or an EVO 36.

Thoughts?

Mine has the LA46, easy choice. Balance prior to the clear top coats is very close to 18% with a tongue muffler. Only know what's been posted on here on the Evo, and you might want to do a search on that, but from what I've read the LA is easier to set up and super dependable. That's why I'm using them in two other planes. Good luck.

The LA .46 will get you air borne quicker.  I am still breaking in my EVO.

The OS40H will certainly work in the Sig Chipmunk.  I had two of those combinations in the 1970's and early 1980's.
However the LA46 will work so much much better that it would be a poor second best to use the 40H.
In my (and I'm sure other's) opinion, the LA46 is the perfect match for airplanes like the Chipmunk.  Don't mess around, get the LA46, in fact get two or three of them before someone at OS realizes how good they really are for CL, and stops making them.   LL~ LL~

So when do we get to see the Chipmunk in the air, Tom?  If it has adjustable leadouts n weight boxes n chit then it could probably be made to fly nearly as well as a certain Score that I know, and garner appearance points, to boot.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Greg, I should have mentioned earlier that in previous Chipmunk strings there are tips including moving the wing forward to help with balance without adding weight. It's worth the search.

It needs the final clear coats.  The forecast says that humidity on sunday may be low enough (60%).

Ooh yeah, I'm all over it!

I started knocking up the wing yesterday before dinner. I'm soo glad I decided to jig the wing, as without it, I'm pretty sure I would have built a pretzel.

I can't remember who said it, but the kit needs a lot of 'micro-fitting', which in turn, sent me 'fitting'

Would anyone care for a build log?

I certainly could use somewhere to ask chippy related questions  ???

I'm always ready to read a build log, particularly if there's lots of pictures.  Yes, please do go for it.

Hehe, I may have some peculiar (read WRONG) ways of doing things though:)

Generally I build reasonably straight...

R U going to replace the plastic cowl, wingtips and fuselage shells? They're awful heavy, in case you haven't realized it yet.  :o Steve

Steve, I'm umming and Ahing over that.

I'm not a real fan of cowls at the best of times, and my track record with ABS cowls isn't too hot. I'm currently tossing up as to wheter I make a basla nose/cowl, or do a f/g copy of the cowl.

Same goes for the wheel pants.
