Dumbest model name ever
« on: August 15, 2007, 11:46:10 PM »
This thread could go hand in hand with Mathew Spencer's "six favorite planes"

What is, in your opinion, the ONE dumbest name ever given to a C/L model. I don't care if your best friend in the world or even a legend in modeling named it either. Spit it out.

I can't stand "Humongous"

Pagan

(A really neat OTS model John Cosby in the 51 Aeromodeller Annual.  Tapered wing with dihedral, inverted cowled in engine, inpired by a full size racer.  Flies very well.  Lousy name that hardly fits the design.)

The British had a knack for applying "unusual" names to their models.  Examples:

"Splatt"  Combat
"Claptrap"  Sport/Trainer
"Snorter"  Sport
"Tramp"  Sport
"Blue Pants" (won stunt at the 54 World Championships)

"Volare", a name a friend of mine who shall remain nameless came up with for one of his planes.  He said it's Italian for "wind".  It reminds me of a Plymouth with windows that don't roll down or Wayne Newton singing to a room full of blue-haired ladies in Las Vegas.     n~

De,

Is the Tumblebug a variation on the Humbug/Doodlebug family of planes?

Bill, that is part of the reason. When I was looking for a new name for my Rebel I was eating pizza at the Organ Grinder in Portland when I said to myself "I think I will rename my plane the Oregon Grinder". I shortened it and called it the Grinder. It did grind out three years of good patterns before it decided to grind up a little pavement.I have new one on the way. HB~>

 Well,

I don't know if these names are dumb or not, I'm sure you'll let me know. :o)

I have three new CL designs on my drawing board. I draw only "bilder's plans."

One is started, I'm framing up the wing. the other two, although not started, the drawings are complete.

 The names are:

 The "International"

 The "Flamingo"

 And The "New American"

 Well Frank,

I was designing these three models when the wife ask, "What are you drawing?"

I simply said, "Three CL model airplanes." The wife said, "Can I name one?"

 Feel bad for me?

How about Nimrod or Di-Doe

 AP^

Di-Doe sounds pretty lame, but NIMROD is a noble name for those in the know...

In the Bible and in legend, Nimrod (Standard Hebrew נִמְרוֹד Nimrod, Tiberian Hebrew נִמְרֹד Nimrōḏ), son of Cush, grandson of Ham, great-grandson of Noah, was a Mesopotamian monarch and "a mighty hunter before Yahweh". He is mentioned in the Table of Nations (Genesis 10), in the First Book of Chronicles, and in the Book of Micah. In the Bible he is an obscure figure; in later interpretations, as recorded by Josephus and the rabbis who compiled the midrash, he is the subject of innumerable legends. The most prominent of these was the story that he built the Tower of Babel.

There was an A-26 Squardron of Nimrods based someplace in Thailand, read the article (if you can find it) Nimrod, King of the Trail.  With eight 50's in the nose, 19-packs of 2.75 rockets and rack of nape under the wings, they were no joke to truckers on the Ho.

Kim - volare is the infinitive of the verb "fly", in other words, it means "To fly".

When used in reference to soccer, it means "To overthrow".

The word for wind is "vento", although some call the wind "Myriah".  LL~ LL~

Back in he late 70's I decided that I would design three new stunters. I gave each a name.

1...Miss Take

2...Miss Conception

3...Miss Alignment

Pretty stupid names, but each lived up to its name! y1

My combat designs (circa '63/'65) were called "Masher". Said so on the clear doped silkspan, in two colors of colored tissue. Blue and yellow looked good. Red and yellow didn't...shoulda tried red/black. The tissue layers were overlayed, identical, but offset a little to give a shadow effect.

There were several F1A designs I did, started with "Seeligull" (came from the Seelig timers used), then "Swizzle Stick", "Schlitzer 2-43", "Buckaroo A-Two" and "Kangaroo A-Two". I learned something from each one. 1) light extremeties helps a LOT. 2) there's a lot of old wive's tales that are wrong.  S?P Steve

Dennis,

I think Johnny Casburn had a design called Miss Behave.  It was available at one time as a kit.  I think the kit was made by the hobby shop that Casburn was associatated with  I am not sure if it would be OTS legal, but it would be close.

Maybe De Hill can enlighten us on this one.
