This thread could go hand in hand with Mathew Spencer's "six favorite planes"
What is, in your opinion, the ONE dumbest name ever given to a C/L model. I don't care if your best friend in the world or even a legend in modeling named it either. Spit it out.
I can't stand "Humongous"

How about Nimrod or Di-Doe

(A really neat OTS model John Cosby in the 51 Aeromodeller Annual. Tapered wing with dihedral, inverted cowled in engine, inpired by a full size racer. Flies very well. Lousy name that hardly fits the design.)
The British had a knack for applying "unusual" names to their models. Examples:
"Splatt" Combat
"Claptrap" Sport/Trainer
"Snorter" Sport
"Tramp" Sport
"Blue Pants" (won stunt at the 54 World Championships)

Little Toot. Always wondered what a Big Toot would look like.

Circle Jerk-----Bi-Slob.
Terrible, terrible names.

Im not big on the name "Time Machine" although I know why its called that and they do fly good. I love the name Pattern Master. Cool.

Dave Mullins' Doo-Dah

HUMBUG!
Is that a name or an opinion?
Oh yeah, a close second "Belfry Bound"....what does that mean???

'Cause you just "GRIND" out patterns with it Brother Leo! y1 :##

Second place for me would be the Spectrum. When a friend built one, we called it the Speculum.

Tumblebug.
Saw it at the Wichita contest last weekend.

"Volare", a name a friend of mine who shall remain nameless came up with for one of his planes. He said it's Italian for "wind". It reminds me of a Plymouth with windows that don't roll down or Wayne Newton singing to a room full of blue-haired ladies in Las Vegas. n~
De,
Is the Tumblebug a variation on the Humbug/Doodlebug family of planes?

Bill, that is part of the reason. When I was looking for a new name for my Rebel I was eating pizza at the Organ Grinder in Portland when I said to myself "I think I will rename my plane the Oregon Grinder". I shortened it and called it the Grinder. It did grind out three years of good patterns before it decided to grind up a little pavement.I have new one on the way. HB~>

Gee Leo, and here I always thought it referred to a coffee grinder. %^@

the worst - "the propbuster" why would you make one??

That name goes without saying. There are a few clubs called the propbusters.

No, it's an original design by Jim Phillips.

Well,
I don't know if these names are dumb or not, I'm sure you'll let me know. :o)
I have three new CL designs on my drawing board. I draw only "bilder's plans."
One is started, I'm framing up the wing. the other two, although not started, the drawings are complete.
The names are:
The "International"
The "Flamingo"
And The "New American"
Charles
.
-
Sorry Charles but..........Flamingo needs to go on the dumb name list.
International and New American are o.k. though.
-
Hey guys what do you think about the ''WRAITH'' its a new design I'm working on and also my favorite movie. It means a ghostly figure!
-
My own Mo'Best. And the Mo'Betta that went before that. Dumb in every respect,
a typical result of trying to be "cute" with a private joke..
Don't ask me what it should have been named.

Well Frank,
I was designing these three models when the wife ask, "What are you drawing?"
I simply said, "Three CL model airplanes." The wife said, "Can I name one?"
Feel bad for me?

I was pretty embarrassed to name a certain bird of mine "Orange Crate" :-[
Charles:
sounds like Flamingo is here to stay. now finish the deal, what color will that plane be??? #^

How about Nimrod or Di-Doe
AP^
Di-Doe sounds pretty lame, but NIMROD is a noble name for those in the know...
In the Bible and in legend, Nimrod (Standard Hebrew נִמְרוֹד Nimrod, Tiberian Hebrew נִמְרֹד Nimrōḏ), son of Cush, grandson of Ham, great-grandson of Noah, was a Mesopotamian monarch and "a mighty hunter before Yahweh". He is mentioned in the Table of Nations (Genesis 10), in the First Book of Chronicles, and in the Book of Micah. In the Bible he is an obscure figure; in later interpretations, as recorded by Josephus and the rabbis who compiled the midrash, he is the subject of innumerable legends. The most prominent of these was the story that he built the Tower of Babel.
There was an A-26 Squardron of Nimrods based someplace in Thailand, read the article (if you can find it) Nimrod, King of the Trail. With eight 50's in the nose, 19-packs of 2.75 rockets and rack of nape under the wings, they were no joke to truckers on the Ho.

De, didn't Dale have one called "Ditch Digger"? ??? Or, were they all named that? ;D

Dale was a member of the Tulsa Gluedobbers, and all of Dale's designs were called Ditchdigger.
It was a very apt name!

Maybe the engine's fake too, and it's just another electic.

Dumbest name? Geez..... can't really decide! LOL!! :##

Kim - volare is the infinitive of the verb "fly", in other words, it means "To fly".
When used in reference to soccer, it means "To overthrow".
The word for wind is "vento", although some call the wind "Myriah". LL~ LL~

Back in he late 70's I decided that I would design three new stunters. I gave each a name.
1...Miss Take
2...Miss Conception
3...Miss Alignment
Pretty stupid names, but each lived up to its name! y1

Let's see, lets combine Joe's model names with Bob Z's commetnary and you get...Miss Behave??? LL~ mw~

We can always depend on Elwyn to come up with a super shot! I see the leadouts exiting underneath the wingtip, due to dihedral, I assume.
De,
Is the fake pipe a shameless attempt to score cheap "impression" points? Love it! #^ LL~

How 'bout a 40 ounce Ringmaster named "No Weigh Jose".

I have a friend that named his plane after his Girlfriend Maxine"MAXIS" The plane didn't last too long??????????? HB~>

My combat designs (circa '63/'65) were called "Masher". Said so on the clear doped silkspan, in two colors of colored tissue. Blue and yellow looked good. Red and yellow didn't...shoulda tried red/black. The tissue layers were overlayed, identical, but offset a little to give a shadow effect.
There were several F1A designs I did, started with "Seeligull" (came from the Seelig timers used), then "Swizzle Stick", "Schlitzer 2-43", "Buckaroo A-Two" and "Kangaroo A-Two". I learned something from each one. 1) light extremeties helps a LOT. 2) there's a lot of old wive's tales that are wrong. S?P Steve

Dennis,
I think Johnny Casburn had a design called Miss Behave. It was available at one time as a kit. I think the kit was made by the hobby shop that Casburn was associatated with I am not sure if it would be OTS legal, but it would be close.
Maybe De Hill can enlighten us on this one.

Yup, that was the "punchline". I remember seeing ads for the kit, can't say I ever saw in real life - thanks for pix Elwyn! It is CERTAINLY Classic legal, had no idea that it would be OTS.

Circle Jerk-----Bi-Slob.
Terrible, terrible names.
Gotta go with Frank on this one. Anything with "slob" in it is not good. In fact, it's gross.
-
"NOBLER!"
GMA used "No Blur" on his biz cards later. Dunno aboot earlier. I am not sure, but it was my impression that was the origin of the name "Nobler", a paronomasia. Whadayathink? Which came first? Anybody know for sure? Z@@ZZZ Steve
