Big problem with the AMA. When they moved from the DC area. my understanding is many of the records got lost, tossed. or eating by a pack of dogs, etc... this may not be true, but don't hold your breath. That number is low enough to have been issued in the late 50's... D>K

Worse is that the number could be re issued. My flying buddy has a number over 1K lower than mine that I have had since the 50's. He got his in 1981 simply by requesting a low number

Most of the above. But it's not likely that AMA will give you the name, even if they can look it up. Privacy and all that PC crap.

Can you post a picture of it? Is it scale or one of the half dozen (or 50?) P-40 stunters published? That info might help, because I'm pretty sure AMA won't.   H^^ Steve

There was a concourse wining P-40 with Rabe design influence by Ron Harding?  I believe I read that he was from that area. I hope this helps. It was a beautiful plane too.

Saw where they (post #799) have a facebook page.  You might post on there and see if anyone knows.  I went thru a lot of the pictures on their page but did not see the model.

Robert.
Contact your District VP (AMA) with the number and he CAN get a name for it, if AMA has it. Of course that is if he wants to do it. I suggest you just put a plaque on the plane with his name and leave him out of the forum. At least tell the VP that. Good luck.

OK.....Did just that.....Asked the AMA:

We do not have a membership in the current database with AMA# 18723.

I looked back on microfilm and I could not find the AMA number.

The only other thing I can tell you is the round about time that AMA number 18723
would have been issued is 1940.

Sorry I couldn't have been of more help.

My AMA is 19775, was issued sometime early 1960's. Number you are interested in is approx only 1000 earlier and someone sys its from 1940's. ?  Doesn't make sense

My number is 22547 and was issued in 1958. Had a lower number but couldn't come up with the 50 cents to renew and being young and dumb just took a new number when I renewed. There is nothing unusual if you got a lower number than a long time member. As I posted earlier you can request a lower unused number if available they will probably accommodate you.

Not sure where the idea that lower numbers came out early.  My first AMA number was 13277 and I got that in 1969.  My friend got his a month later and he was 13207.

Still would be great to see some pics of this P-40, it's always fun to get a look at neat old models. Maybe next time you're in the area you can stop and snap a few?  y1

I stumbled across this monster a few years ago hanging over the lobby entrance at the airport in Fairmont, MN...

Robert, as far as I can remember I got my AMA number mid to late 1969 and it is 74321, obviously way different than you and your friend. Maybe your numbers were just given to you to fill in gaps in the sequence at the time? Who really knows what AMA policy was for number issuance way back before the dawn of computers?

Since this has morphed into a AMA number thread I have several thoughts...

I was 15 in 1970 and my AMA number at the time ( I really don't remember it) was a 4 digit num....from these posts recently I assume it was a reissued number because all my flying buddies that registered with AMA that year had 6 digit numbers

I re-enlisted in the AMA around 1985 and (again no memory of it) was 6 digits and my most recent application was a high sequence 6 digit from, I think, back in 2010 or 2011

The only reason I remember this crap was having to put the number on my planes I used scratch off decals from the LHS

Part of my problem with AMA wanting to broker some joint registration with the FCC is the fact that in the AMA there is no set process...they reuse numbers all the time and they don't have a log of who had what number when...

Pretty much the same problem the US Army has with the selective service number or Regular Army Number before they changed to using the SSA number...a fire wiped out the data and it is near impossible to find information on that set of data

And I know this exactly from this kind of search for old a guy/gal where in the photo, all we see is the plane and the AMA number  (every web site forum I am a member of has this question a few times a year)

I also was a AMA club secretary who could ask AMA to look up a particular person and give me his current AMA number, or, on the web site, put in his or her name and once the AMA number populated I could add that person to the Club roster

Since my so called expertise in computers is really data base creation and efficiency, I am always a Little POed at the FCC, AMA, and a few others who have a recycle # policy or a vanity policy....In this case the SSA and the FAA are pretty consistent a with ONE UNIQUE number per applicant policy
