Derringer w/ Enya SS50 video
« on: March 03, 2009, 08:16:48 PM »
Here are two products together that hardly we hear about  The Deerringer and the Enya SS50, what a great combination!

My friend built the RSM Derringer and he was having problems adjusting the CG with his ST G51  so I suggested him to try my Enya SS50 which is much lighter and I'd had a chance to further testing this engine. Before I had tried props with 5 to 6 pitch and the engine work well but decided to try the APC 12.25 x 3.75 and see how it ran and for my surprise we got a great stunt run in high rpms. We still have a few issues to fix to get it perfect, the engine is running a bit strong going down on the outside squares, other then that the engine is doing great 4-2-4 especially on the vertical 8 and hour glass, just perfect.

We launch at 10300 rpms and the engine kicks in much higher rpms when the nose goes up and it seems it is four stroking at high rpms??

I love the Derringer Jet Style looks and it flies so well.

So here is its my friend Rogério (3rd at the last Brazilian NATS) flying his Derringer

I have to apologise for I had to run with the camera due to shifting winds and I couldn't  see a darn thing on the LCD with so much sun....it was a very hot day too in the upper 90s!

Thanks for sharing that Martin. The run sounded strong and steady. Bob's Derringer is a great flying design. Both together seem close to perfect.

Thanks for the video.  I am going to forward it to some RC fliers who donot believe we fly maneuvers with 5 foot bottom height above the ground.

The engine and prop seemed really well suited to that plane. Appears to be a well integrated setup.

Nice plane, engine sounded very strong.  The only point I think I would make is not to use bare fingers with an APC prop (a chicken stick is cheap insurance).

you are so right James, I insisted he used one, but he didn't care.  The engine starts easily with just a back flip on the spinner, not having the spinner is a bit more complicated.

Hopefully this weekend we'll nail the tank height and get that perfect run.  In the wingover the plane is moving away and the sound is not true as how much rpm the engine is revving up.

I think this engine can do very well on a low pitch 12" 3 blade carbon fiber prop, can't wait to try one.

The secret to any composite prop is sand paper.  Sand the leading and trailing edges to knock the flash off.  The engine did sound strong and the plane looked solid.  DOC Holliday

Today was again in the upper 90s and in the afternoon wind was blowing about 18mph, perfect condition to see how well the Derringer/Enya SS50 would handle heat and the wind. We lower the tank 1/8" and the little surge of power on the outsides going down disappeared, and Rogério said the Derringer flew pretty well in the wind and the engine did it's job to keeping the speed pretty constant during the Wind.

The engine has run less then 2 gallons and compression still building a little bit every flight. The way it is now, we can affirm it is at least 20% stronger then the ST G51

The combustion chamber on the head of this engine is pretty flat and very different from the ST G51. Wondering if that is where the extra power is coming from.
