Concourse at the NATS

Can anybody out there in STUNT LAND tell me who won the Concourse at the NATS.

How could they NOT give it to him, after a 20 pt finish. Concours at a contest with appearance points is kinda weird.

It is pilot's choice award.  The pilots put in their vote prior to knowing how many points were awarded to each plane.  And many times there are several planes on the front row at 19 points.  One year Bob G got the front row at 19 points by himself but Windy still came away with the trophy.  Those with alot of publicity prior to getting to the contest can have an advantage.  The pilots get to look over the planes prior to the meeting but there is not alot of time to look them all over.  You have to make the choice pretty quickly.  But in PTG's case he just blew em' away!

I haven't seen the Zealot yet (live, that is), but I've seen most of his Divas and many of his earlier planes (the Diplomat was just cool). Other than one of the strangest color senses I've ever seen (the words subtle and muted are not in Phil's vocabulary), his planes are spectacular. The workmanship and attention to detail is always the very best and they always shine like the sun. Phil is the best builder and finisher I know and I know several very, very good ones.

I have gone several times.  I could have sworn the picking was done prior to the meeting.  I could be mistaken.

I saw your plane and it was awesome!  I heard it flew excellent as well.  Congrats on a good show!

This would be nice in the real world but the way it is ,if your airplane is not on the first 2 rows (first row) you really don't stand much of a chance of the trophy. Its human nature. How many back row airplane have won? I would have voted for Ron Burns plane,but because it had no shine is was way back and didn't receive the recognition it deserve.


Just as the low scoring judge controls the contest so does the scoring judges in appearance judging.

Interesting thread.

For those who are interested, I offer an opinion.  Above and beyond anything, I am always humbled with being chosen by fellow competitors as having the best ANYTHING!!  This year I was completely blown away by the response to the Zealot. There are people who can attest to never having seen me so unfocused and almost giddy! 

Over the years of watching and listening to champions and those who excel in many disciplines, the single thing of note is that to an individual, they are their own toughest critics.  For me the years of competitive pursuits have definitely been an adventure to say the least. 

Designing, building and flying is not work to me.  It is a challenging adventure and just like the “Energizer Bunny” just keeps going and going and going and………….  Some day I know it will have to end but to quote my good friend Brett Buck, “THE GOOD TIMES ARE NOW” 

To those who voted for and thought this year the Zealot was best, I sincerely thank you and say, WOW really??  For those who thought it didn’t quite measure up, I’ll be back!

Phil's airplane looked great. Just thinking about taping off that paint
job gave me a headache, a true work of art.

This year we were given our 'pilot's choice' ballots after the pilot's meeting
as we were let back into the gym to pick up our planes. We then were
able to walk around and check out all the planes and cast our votes.

Many times in the past I have been a bit of a 'contrarian' when voting for
pilot's choice, not usually picking the front row plane. I voted for Bob G's
'97 Bear once, I voted for Kirk Mullinix' Royal Flush one year (love that plane), and
for Banjock's P-51 the first year he had it there. But, this year there was
absolutely no doubt I was voting for PTG's plane.
