College
« on: August 29, 2022, 12:20:29 PM »
In a way this is college related as I told my younger guys I flew with to worry about getting a good education instead  of that new super hot kit or engine.  Some did and came back to control line after college, family and house.  Most worked to pay for their education.  I let Southwestern Bell Telephone pay for my education while I worked for them.  Retire with 34 years service.  Now our rich politians want to do this.

Yes the administraer has I my permission to move this. D>K

The current clueless president doesn't know what his "team" is doing.  He's a bit like a loaf of bread that a cook shapes.

They are trying their best to keep the country riled up and confused so they can sneak in bad policy during the hullablloo.

The latest College Flyer is a good example.

They have to pay for thier votes somehow.

It is a blatant vote-buying scheme - buying the votes of *the people who were going to vote for them anyway* and *thought they deserved (yet another) handout*. With our money - after already having squandered *trillions* on, more-or-less, nothing except "stimulus".

I was a sucker, I guess, I got a student loan, but paid it back before the first payment was due. Of course, mine was only something like $1500 because I went to a state college instead of MIT, Caltech, or Georgia Tech since *I couldn't afford those*.

People who took out a loan to buy a work truck, buy tools, etc, are just completely screwed, they aren't getting their loans paid off.

I'm wondering when this turned into a political forum.

I come here to learn about control line model airplanes, not to read people's complaints about American politics.

I just got something like $11,000 dollars stolen from me by what amounts to royal fiat, and the taxpayers as a whole $400,000,000,000. I think people have a right to express an opinion on the topic.

Dark Brandon is doing an excellent job, no doubt will be appreciated down the road. Reconstitution of NATO to abridge Putin. Our economy as strong as any of the major industrial nations. An even handed approach to Covid. His attorney general engineering holding the previous office holder accountable for his numerous illegalities, that include endangering our military strength (probably aspiring to sell out our national security). This despite the skillful, all time champion Con, mesmerizing 20 percent of the nation. An evil talent who would be King while torching Democracy. The Republican Party a sink hole of a mess. Advocating the suppression of Choice, while de-funding law enforcement agencies, CIA, FBI, who are holding criminals accountable who would destroy our Democracy and way of life in the USA.

I let the government pay for my college education, via the G.I. Bill.  But I earned the money by serving in the military for 4 years.  It was their idea.  I just took advantage of it.  Maybe I should have taken out a student loan.  Then I would have had lots more free money so that I could have enjoyed decent meals instead of living on noodles and soup.

Congratulation Dennis!  That short piece is just brilliant.  Not only does it give the name of the current president of the United States in a recognized derogatory term, your paragraph encapsulates the all of the things that MSNBC, CNN, and the democrats in Congress have distorted, mischaracterized and misrepresented for the past one and a half years while blatantly ignoring and deflecting all of the failures of the current admisnistration.

Well too late now.  We did live in a better world back then when we were responsible for our actions. S?P
Immediately after high school in the early 1970's, spent several years in Uncle Sam's scouting troop to get the GI Bill, used it to get my degree. Joined the Nat. Guard last two years of college, which granted me a tuition waiver for joining. Continued in reserves to get 20+ years for a reserve retirement, plus stayed on the job for 28+ years for retirement.

Then 45 years ago, state tuition was subsidized by both government and corporations. Tuition was $225.00 per semester in Hawaii for full time (12+ credits). Tuition now at ENMU is $900 for one 3 credit semester course. Figure about $10k per year books and tuition, $40k not including living expenses for a bachelors.

Other schools, costs are higher. The banks took over, now everything is through loans.

I see money leaving the US to benefit all others but the US population. Jobs included. Politicians don't give a hoot for anyone but their own pockets.

Galloping,

I was about to say the same regarding the costs.  Here in MI in 1979 a credit hour at MSU would cost the student $24.50; now it is $546.00. If you factor inflation, the $24.50 from 1979 would be worth about $109.00 in today's dollars; yet the current rate is 5x that. This begs the question of why? I was under the impression that State Universities were meant to provide an affordable education....

Just like you need carpenters, plumbers, welders, pipe fitters, electricians, etc. you also need engineers, scientists, nurses, doctors, accountants, etc. to have a working society and be able to compete in the world economy. It is not a zero sum game as most of the discussion here seems to indicate.

I've seen changes in school but not for good. Used to be shop classes to give high school students a chance to see what field of work they might want to try after high school and what they might be talented for. This included automotive, wood, metal, electrical, and agriculture shops classes. Not everyone is college material. Much of today seems geared toward college preparatory, but even that is basically being sabotaged with modern teaching methods that don't ground kids in the important basics of reading, writing and arithmetic. Not only the white collars are being affected but the blue collar, too.

Even if the schools got straightened out to properly educate people like they are supposed to, it takes about 20 years for society to enjoy the benefits thereof.

Our Pastor graduated school and had a football scholarship. Turned it down as he wanted to go into the ministry. Lucky he had a fiend get him into local electricians union. Now he is paid for on job training and is till our pastor. D>K
There are lessons to be learned by working with one's hands. The Apostle Paul was a tent maker as well as preacher. He did that not to be a burden to anyone, although he had the right to accept support from those whom he trained and encouraged in the Gospel. A pastor who is busy doing visitations, sermon preparation, counseling, etc. at least 40 hours a week is earning his keep. One who works a secular job has less time to do these other tasks. However, it does give him freedom in not compromising as some have, by doing popular messages versus vital messages, because they are concerned about income.

Bravo to all who participated...even the handful who, IMHO, are mostly immunized against the reality of our nation's status...

I'd like to propose the following as a basis by which contributions ought to be evaluated.  To have a valid point of view on any matter of disagreement practitioners of opposing points of view should hold themselves to a consistent standard of exposure to both sides of the debate.

I, for instance, read the San Francisco Chronicle (perhaps the farthest left publication on the USA's landscape in a huge field of comparably left wing resources) pretty much front to back daily ever since moving to the Bay Area some 60 years ago.  It is a somewhat painful exercise but one with which I persist so as to, in my not particularly humble opinion, experience for myself what I feel is necessary in order to engage in discussions/debates with respect our country and its status and future.  (Alas, I do find the Chron to be much less fair in their coverage of both sides of events nowadays than during the first few decades I subscribed.  Back then they did, in fact, publish roughly 40/50% of my Letters to the Editor and did have a single alternative reporter...a gal, to their credit at the time...who was more or less an op-ed specialist)

Yup, I also conscientiously monitor Fox News as pretty much the sole source of opposition points of view on matters of discord with respect to our nation and its future.  It is my hope that those with points of view counter to my own have also made an honest attempt to regularly read/view opposition points of view so as to allow them to speak as informed sources of their personal points of view.

FWIW I seldom read opposing points of view that openly address the differences and the merits/demerits of same.  I do occasionally find the debaters here on the left of SH  to be "modestly" more  informed than provided by the vast majority of the mainstream media...albeit not by very much.  I encourage them to find the fairness gene that drives them to do as I've addressed above.  Devote a planned part of each day to be thoughtfully engaged with opposing points of view...and not solely the distorted images the CNN anchors and their voluminous ilk attempt to pass off as winning opposition points of view.  I don't, for instance, find name calling to be persuasive.

Ted

John, talcum powder was a proven carcinogen 60-70 years ago.  The talc was mined from layers.  Up until it became certain that some people, mostly mothers and babies, developed cancers talc was thought to be OK.  But, other parts of the talc mines had other 'stuff" that carried fibers with a different chemical composition that could cause cancer.

Talcum power suppliers had to go through a lot of expense to make sure their product was clean.

Since then "clean" talcum is available in stores again.  Even so, DON'T breath the dust as a precaution.
