Cold weather and clear dope
« on: February 13, 2006, 01:48:13 PM »
I need to patch some silk span using clear dope. Will the cold weather cause problems?

Thanks
Paul

I've shot dope in as low as 35 degree weather with OK results. Need to put enough retarder in to slow the drying so that the water can escape before it dries or you will indeed get some blushing. For, say, 45 or 50 degrees, I'd put in about 8 or 9% retarder.

Note: a lot of this depends on the humidity level. When I've shot dope in really cold weather, it's been in about 8% humidity. Even at that it took a bit of retarder to let what little water was there to evaporate. I wouldn't even consider shooting clear if it was 40 or 45 degrees and 90% humidity (about what we've had lately)

Heating up the doped surface with a heat gun will get rid of the "bloom" (we used to call it "blush").  Just be careful to not get it so hot it blisters the dope.

More importantly, it is how much thinner and retarder you use.   D>K

Theres pictures / movie of young Urtnowski spraying outdoors in the snow ! .

HUMIDITY is the thing .

Orrible ' blushed ' missh mash cloudy colour - silver & blue - when I hit it with clear - IN THE SUN - cleaned itself up .

So , theres always hope .  VD~   LL~

Think that that , not to damp & misty & humid , is the lynchpin . Wait for a sunny day for the last few coats .
The TEMPERATURE is of significance . Epoxy kicking off in ten minutes in 40 + temp , takes 30 hours at around ZERO ,
ands useless . Sig Litecoat im slapping on- silk over tissue . A few Coats . leave 24 plus hours , till aftern lunch when its a bit warmer ,
for each ' next assault ' on it .

Oh wow. Who brought this post up from 2006???

I have moved to warmer climates and cold weather is not a thing anymore but humidity is. 🤣
