Cobra with in the sun, with clear
« on: March 13, 2013, 12:05:38 PM »
Hi all!

I have three pics of the Cobra out in the sun on the back deck. This is with three coats of clear. This is Duplicolor clear from a rattle can, and I am not happy with the thickness of the coats, it just seems VERY thin, so much so, that I feel if I wet sand with 1500, and then polish I will be through the clear.. Oh well, a few more coats are needed I guess.

Be careful when sanding the clear you are using does not get as hard as clear with hardener in it.

Duplicolor is NOT fuel proof. You need a coat of Sig or Randolph or some other fuel proof clear dope on top of it.
It will seem to be fuel proof at first but it will get gummy after a few flights. I made one plane go the entire year by cleaning it as soon as I flew it. I later refinished that plane and still fly it. Another one that had several flights on it I just cleaned it well and put one coat of Randolph on top and it is fine. I use Duplicolor right up till the last coat.

NOTE I have never used the spray can clear only the quart cans.

Pat...that paint scheme really enhances the rudder length...and the tones are stunning.  y1

With your rendition of this fine "I" beamer, there can be no doubt of the beauty of the plane.  Very nice indeed.  As an aside, I have used Clear gloss varathane in a rattle can and it holds up very well.  The exterior version also has a UV inhibitor in it. H^^

Mr. Reach,

How does the varathane polish up?

I never polished it.  I am a sport flier only, so super shiny models are not on the top of my list of things to do! LOL  Like anything though, it should polish ok.  I use it for wood working projects and always polish and ad coats to get that high luster finish.  But thats on wood, although I can see no reason it shouldn't be the same on an aircraft model.

Think silver over blue would look good, but that's me.
And we don't see this kind of paint scheme on ships...
It's got that old "Classic" school look, then... S?P VD~ H^^
But It could be blue over silver too!
Anyway, the LE area is crying for some pinstripes....
