Cleaner Brodak Dope

Is there a " generic " cleaner I can use in brushes for brodak dope [butyrate]?
Would acetone, or MEK etc work?

There is "acetone" in Brodak thinner. I use it instead of the more expensive Brodak thinner.

A few years ago, DuPont 3608S thinner was described as compatible and suitable with SIG and Brodak butyrate dopes.

Works for me, at my very limited volume of use. It is (was?) available at auto paint supply shops. Price was not outrageous compared to hobby supplier equivalents. I don't think it was packaged in less than gallon screw-top cans.

Important to note that the one with the 'S' stock number designator has the desired compatibilities. Another DuPont product of that number - but without the 'S' - did not, or wasn't fuel proof, or something.

If no DuPont supplier is available, there should be an equivalent from other mfrs.

OBTW, with the generous supply of 3806S, I use it for brush and other clean-up as well as for reducing paint for spraying.

For clean-up of old Aero-Gloss dope, Rust-Oleum lacquer thinner by the gallon and quart from Walmart works for me.

I use the same stuff for Deft Clear Sanding Lacquer Sealer For Wood (works like nitrate at $12/qt and it topcoats with butyrate just like nitrate).

I keep a gallon of the cheapest lacquer thinner on the shelf to clean brushes and spray equipment

  If you look at the label on most cheap hardware store or auto parts store lacquer thinner, you might see that it is just acetone. Do a search on the finishing forum and you will find threads on what different thinners guys have used and why. For simply cleaning brushes, especially ones with some dried dope, MEK and then a soaking in cheap thinner shopuld do the job.
