Christmas in June
« on: June 21, 2012, 04:39:42 PM »
In the shop patching and fixing planes after last weekend.   Daughter comes out with a package.   It is a kit by Walter Umland of the Excaliber.   I had to drop/lay down what I was doing and open the package.   I am still amazed at what Walter does.   Big surprise is photo of our own Big John Miller holding his Excaliber on the box.   I think Gordy is in the background.   Thank you Walter for another terrific kit.  Soon as I get the P-47 done will get on this one.  Nothing like finding more dings while filling and sanding. #^ #^ #^

That will be a fun build Doc, and coming from Walter I'm sure it'll fall right together.

The Excaliber really tempted me too, I've always liked the design, but the build list here is severely backed up. y1

my Excalibur arrived yesterday and I can only echo what John Holiday said. Walt's kits are probably the zenith of the kit makers art .The laser cutting is absolutely perfect and you could probably shake the parts free from the sheet wood. Plans are perfect with a check of a few parts to confirm accuracy, but Walt has always been a perfectionist about plans and parts fit.
If you have never had one of Walts kits your overdue to have one that could very well change your opinion of what a kit really is, or should be.

Sounds great, Doc!  Ain't it fun to get a great new kit?  Since two years ago I have actually gotten a kit or two and a few short kits.  Before that I had only had two kits in the previous 30 plus years!  And a couple things are from Walter.  All are beautiful!

Good luck and let's see a few more pictures of the P-47!!!

Very envious, my daughter gives me 'to do' lists to be performed at her home. I mostly ignore, like I do the 'honey do'lists.

Big Bear asked and here is the latest.  After finally getting in the mood to dope and fill, then sand.   I took all outside to do the primer coat on the fuselage.   May shoot a coat on the wings, stab and elevator.  Thought I had all the nits, pits, dents and other things taken care of.  But, the grey primer really brings out the bad spots.  Glad you guys can't see it  up close.   Need to go back to auto paint store for more primer. Great idea this Christmas in June thing.  Is that how you got around Santa's bag-of-coal list?   >:D  LL~

All teasin aside Doc, I think it is GREAT.  You got a great subject for the next VSC as well as Profile & regular CLPA.  It will look great in one of your clear finishes too.  Looking forward to your build thread...
