This is what my shop was waiting for...
« on: June 08, 2014, 09:13:03 PM »
Finally! This is a new building/sanding table. Due to my sensitivity to balsa dust in the last few years, I just couldn't handle any model building. Masks helped, but they're bothersome and uncomfortable. Took all the fun out of being in the shop. Hopefully this is the solution. Built by my father in law in his extensive home wood shop, it's real work of art. I'm going to glass top the front section.
Let the building commence!

For a second there I thought you'd mounted a 12" speaker in your workbench.

That would have made for an interesting build session!

I keep wondering whether a sanding station is worth it, I'd like to know what you guys think in the long term. As it is I just wander outside and make a balsa cloud.

Now THAT is nice! Where does the dust go once sucked up? To the vacuum cleaner museum?

I have a friend who is a serious woodworker, has one of these sawdust suckers. Works very well. I am at the point of being unable to sand balsa without a dust mask myself, sets off epic coughing fit and probably not good for the lungs. I have been wearing a paper dust mask while working for the last few years, helps but as you say kind of a PITA.

Mike, there are filters that slide into the sides of the table. I'm sure they'll need to be replaced often to keep air moving.

I was hoping for "vacuum cleaner museum" but filters are probably more practical.

Is your shop air conditioned, or do you just tough it out in the heat? I know it is purpose built so maybe has AC.

About to start sanding the primer off the '52 Nobler but that will be wet so no coughing fits are expected.

Did you forget what kind of business I run? Of course it's air conditioned!

I'll need to give consideration to something like that. As much as a lot of people say they don't like Model Aviation Magazine, there was a neat article by Windy about building just such a bench using all off the shelf stuff. I'll have to dig that out and revisit it. Even just sanding in front of a cheap box fan on the intake side with a furnace filter taped to it would help.

Dave Day used to do his sanding in the bathroom with the extractor fan on full blast!  This looks like a much better solution, though... and the woodwork's a joy to behold.

Hey Dan that's what I use. Works good. But the sanding table is really cool.  #^ Nice job. That cage fan should suck that balsa dust great.  H^^

Yes, I do remember the kind of business you have! That was kind of an obtuse joke about the AC.

But why would your wife make her dad take up quilting, and will the local Lady Quilters Guild let him in, maybe on a trial basis? Whatever, it got you one beautiful piece of woodwork.
